With Halloween coming up this week, I figured there was no better time to share with you one of the spookiest places that I have ever been- The Salem Witch Museum.

In 1692 the ultra conservative Puritans experienced a brief period where their fears of the supernatural overtook their better judgement and they felt they had to eradicate any and all persons who they thought were practicing witchcraft. From February 1692 till May 1693, more than 200 people were killed because they had been accused of witchcraft. Being thought a witch was not just directed to women but towards men as well. This is the most notorious example of mass hysteria in history and is still referred to in political, psychological, and theological discussions to this day.

Millions of people flock to Salem every year for some goosebump inducing experiences and the best place to start is the Salem Witchcraft Museum. This museum is designed to make you feel like you are one of the accusing crowd. You step into a large space where you are surrounded by recreated scenes of the witch trials. The effect is creepy and beyond anything like any other museum experience.

After the tour, take a walk through the cemetery and read the stones of those that died during the trials. For an even better experience, take one of the guided tours by a local historian.
