The House of Seven Gables {Massachusetts}

This house in New England was originally built in 1668 by ship owner and merchant Captain John Turner. But it is always remembered as the setting of the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The House of Seven Gables. Anyone who enjoys a good gothic novel has heard of this seven gabled house. Touring this house is a step back into Puritan New England and it is full of history and a little spooky wonder. With a hidden staircase that circles up around the chimney which has been used throughout history as a hiding place of safety. The gabled house and a small museum dedicated to the life and writing of Nathaniel Hawthorne make up a historic district in itself. When next in Salem, be sure to tour this incredible home and see the mark it left on American literature.
