Old Spann House Trail- Tims Ford State Park {Tennessee}

We had big plans for our long weekend, but sadly none of them panned out. So instead we decided on a visit to our favorite state park for some fresh air and a snowy hike. Winter is such a different experience here in Tennessee than it is in Utah. Tennessee is less prepared to deal with snow, and while they don’t get a lot of snow the snow they do get is very wet and heavy and for some reason feels colder than the dry powdery snow of Utah. But the rolling hills are so pretty with that little bit of snow on them.

For today’s hike we took the Old Spann House Trail just across the road from the visitor center. This is an easy hike that follows the gentle climbs of the hills. And no trail here would be complete without wooden bridges taking you back and forth across the stream.

The beech trees stand out from the rest of the bare trees with their soft golden leaves that never fall. Especially down along the stream, these trees are really pretty set against the brown and white of winter.

There wasn’t enough snow to really play in. But the bridges and benches at least provided enough to make a handful of so we could throw snowballs at each other along the path. And we were able to gather enough snow to put together a small snowman that ended up looking more like an oddly shaped bird.

When we made it back to the visitor center we noticed a sign calling for a vote on the most favorite state park. I think it is safe to say that Tims Ford State Park is our favorite- at least it is the one that we have visited the most. We have seen it through all the seasons and we are still discovering new corners of it.

    What a beautiful place; I can see why it received your vote! There’s something invigorating about being out on a snowy day. Thanks for sharing!

      Absolutely agree 🙂 being out hiking in the snow is a favorite for me. Especially here where so many hunker down when it snows, it means you have the outdoors all to yourself to enjoy.

    Looks very atmospheric Meg. The snow didn’t impede your progress and there was enough for snowballs. Here in England we’ve had very light snowfall and plenty of frost. It’s the coldest I’ve been in years, ha! Hope you are keeping warm and that 2022 has gotten off to a good start.

      haha, I bet it is quite the readjustment to the cold for you! 🙂 When we had the first cold day in Tennessee after living in Florida I just kept wondering what was wrong with me because I felt colder and like I would never get warm again. So far 2022 is off to a good start. I hope your year is also starting out well.

    The Tennessee snow conditions sound similar to those we are accustomed to in the north of England. Cold and damp rather than lovely and crisp and bright. Nonetheless you seem to have made the best of your visit and the state park looks nice

      Thanks Marion 🙂 Cold and damp sounds like a perfect description of winter here. But it does make for a good day to get out because everyone else stays home. I hope that you have a great rest of your week!

    I must admit, when I think of Tennessee I don’t think of snow, except maybe in the mountains. (You have mountains, right?)

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

      well, the people here call them mountains but I would say they are more like hills. Even the Smoky Mountains (which are incredible) seem more hilly than mountains to me. But coming from the rocky mountains I have a very biased idea of what makes a mountain 🙂

    Definitely a favourite thing in the past, such fun building snowmen and just love the absolute quiet after snow has fallen. It’s been a long while since I saw snow but I think that’s about to change in the next few weeks!

      I’m with you, that quiet space after snow is so peaceful. Here’s hoping that you get to experience the snow again soon 🙂
