We had big plans for our long weekend, but sadly none of them panned out. So instead we decided on a visit to our favorite state park for some fresh air and a snowy hike. Winter is such a different experience here in Tennessee than it is in Utah. Tennessee is less prepared to deal with snow, and while they don’t get a lot of snow the snow they do get is very wet and heavy and for some reason feels colder than the dry powdery snow of Utah. But the rolling hills are so pretty with that little bit of snow on them.
For today’s hike we took the Old Spann House Trail just across the road from the visitor center. This is an easy hike that follows the gentle climbs of the hills. And no trail here would be complete without wooden bridges taking you back and forth across the stream.
The beech trees stand out from the rest of the bare trees with their soft golden leaves that never fall. Especially down along the stream, these trees are really pretty set against the brown and white of winter.
There wasn’t enough snow to really play in. But the bridges and benches at least provided enough to make a handful of so we could throw snowballs at each other along the path. And we were able to gather enough snow to put together a small snowman that ended up looking more like an oddly shaped bird.
When we made it back to the visitor center we noticed a sign calling for a vote on the most favorite state park. I think it is safe to say that Tims Ford State Park is our favorite- at least it is the one that we have visited the most. We have seen it through all the seasons and we are still discovering new corners of it.
