Most trips to Prince Edward Island begin and end with a visit to Charlottetown. This capital city is a colorful array of houses, beautiful old stone buildings, and a lovely walk along the waterfront where you can see the city as it sits on the water with lighthouses nearby.

This city was named after queen consort of King George III, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. It was here in 1864 that the Charlottetown Conference was held at what is now the Province House National Historic Site, and the result of that conference was the birth of the country of Canada. Up until then, it was considered a British territory. It’s hard to believe that such a large country was established in this small corner on the Eastern shore.

Victoria Row is probably the most popular area of the city. This is where visitors can pop into trendy shops and restaurants, see the gothic cathedral of St. Dunstan’s Basilica, and catch a musical based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s story of Anne of Green Gables. It was really Lucy Maud Montgomery’s stories of the orphan girl Anne coming to live on Prince Edward Island that really brought this area notice to the rest of the world. But my favorite part of the beautiful city was walking along the water, enjoying the sea breeze and hearing the waves hit the rocks.
