“It’s a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
–J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings
Hello! I’m Meg and welcome to Grand Misadventures, a collection of the places I have explored and what I have learned along the way.
Now I know what you’re thinking…Misadventures??? Doesn’t that sound a little like an accident??? And you would be right. I have found that some of the greatest places of my wanderings were places that I happened upon by accident while I was looking for something else. Or places that were completely not what I expected to them to be. Or the places that I went to on a spur of the moment, without any planning beforehand. Or the places I have gone where everything went wrong, but still ends up being a favorite trip.
The name of this blog came from our first trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park. Everything went wrong! I was so sick that our first stop before the park was the hospital. We couldn’t find a camping place and ended up driving in the middle of the night from the far north end of Yellowstone all the way down to Jackson Hole until we found a spot only to discover that we didn’t have all the things we needed to put up our tent so we ended up sleeping in the car. And while my hubby was trying to show me how to use the bear spray, the wind picked up and we both got a face full of pepper spray. But even after all of this- that was our favorite trip that we have ever taken together. Behind the photos there are the misadventures, the history, and the people you meet but they all come together to make for wonderful destinations.
We started out in Utah where you could usually find us hiking in the mountains. But my husband Brad was offered an amazing opportunity to work at Cape Canaveral so we packed up and moved across the country to the Space Coast of Florida. We saw great state parks, got behind the scenes views of Cape Canaveral and other aspects of the Space Coast, and of course got great use from our Disneyworld passes. And then the winds of change came again, this time taking us to the hills of Tennessee where now we are exploring everything we can find in this area. Along with our daughter Tessa and our dog Scout, we’re always off exploring some place or another and finding great places along the way.
I have had some amazing opportunities to see many places, and with each experience I am changed for the better. Seeing the world and experiencing other places and cultures broadens horizons, gives understanding and gratitude, and changes my view on the world and on myself. And I have found that some of the greatest travel moments happen on accident. So come along as I discover new places where I am and also share some of my favorite places that I have loved and learned from. Join me for some grand misadventures!
