Visiting Bubblegum Alley: A Strangely Fascinating Attraction {California}

Are you ready for the other extreme of the day?

After experiencing the over-the-top elegance of the Madonna Inn, we headed to the complete opposite end of the spectrum. From pink walls, chandeliers, and elaborate desserts to… thousands upon thousands of pieces of chewed gum stuck to a wall.

Welcome to Bubblegum Alley.

Located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo, Bubblegum Alley is exactly what it sounds like—a narrow alleyway where visitors have been leaving pieces of chewing gum on the walls for decades. It is strange. It is colorful. It is slightly horrifying.

And, somehow, it has become one of the city’s most recognizable attractions.

  • Size: approximately 70 feet long and 15 feet high
  • Time Needed: 10-20 minutes

What Is Bubblegum Alley?

Tucked between buildings in downtown San Luis Obispo, Bubblegum Alley stretches approximately 70 feet long and 15 feet high, with both walls covered from top to bottom in layers of colorful chewing gum.

Bubblegum Alley has a debated origin (often traced to the mid-20th century), and part of the fun is that nobody seems to have a definitive answer.

No matter how many pictures you’ve seen, there is something strangely fascinating about standing in front of it in person. The sheer amount of gum covering the walls makes you stop and wonder how this tradition began and how many people have contributed to it over the years.

It is equal parts fascinating and disgusting. And perhaps that is exactly why people continue to visit.

Bubblegum Alley has become such a beloved local curiosity that it appears on many lists of things to do in San Luis Obispo. It even has its own sign, making it easy to find—just type “Bubblegum Alley” into your GPS and you’ll be guided straight to one of California’s most unusual attractions.

Our Visit to Bubblegum Alley

Of course, we couldn’t visit San Luis Obispo and not experience it for ourselves.

We picked up some bubble gum before arriving, chewing it as we drove through downtown and preparing ourselves to become part of the strange tradition. When we arrived, we added our own small contribution to the colorful walls using straws instead of our hands. (Probably the best decision we made.)

Standing there, looking at the layers upon layers of gum, it was impossible not to think about how many visitors had stood in this same spot before us. Every color represented someone’s quick stop, silly moment, or travel memory.

Of course, it’s best not to think too deeply about the thousands of pieces of gum covering the walls—or where exactly some of them have been before they arrived there.

Sometimes travel is about appreciating beauty. And sometimes travel is about embracing something completely ridiculous.

Is Bubblegum Alley Worth Visiting?

Bubblegum Alley is not a destination you visit because it is beautiful. It is not a place where you will spend hours exploring, and it probably won’t be the most impressive stop on your California Central Coast road trip.

But is it worth visiting? Absolutely.

The charm of Bubblegum Alley is that it is completely unexpected. In a world full of carefully designed attractions, this tiny downtown alley exists simply because thousands of people decided to participate in a strange, colorful tradition. It is weird, a little gross, and completely memorable.

For many travelers, the best road trip stops are not always the biggest attractions. Sometimes they are the places that make you laugh, the places you tell your friends about later, or the places that leave you wondering, “How does something like this even exist?” Bubblegum Alley is exactly that kind of stop.

It takes only a few minutes to visit, but it adds something fun and unexpected to a Central Coast itinerary. If you’re already exploring downtown San Luis Obispo, it is absolutely worth taking a small detour to see one of California’s strangest attractions.

Tips For Visiting Bubblegum Alley

Embrace the ridiculous. Not every stop on a road trip needs to be beautiful or educational. Sometimes the best memories come from the places that make you laugh and say, “We can’t believe this is a real thing.”

  • Bring your own bubble gum if you want to participate in the tradition. Just remember to bring your trash with you afterward.
  • Use a straw or another object to place your gum on the wall instead of your hands. Trust me- this is one travel memory you don’t need on your fingers.
  • Look closely at the walls. The colors, patterns, and layers make for some surprisingly interesting photos
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Bubblegum Alley is located downtown, making it easy to combine with shops, restaurants, and other San Luis Obispo attractions.
  • Remember that this is a community space. Enjoy the fun tradition while helping keep the area clean and respectful.
  • Don’t think too hard about the details. Sometimes it is better to simply appreciate the strange wonder of a place and move on before your brain starts asking too many questions.
Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo

Bubblegum Alley probably won’t be the most beautiful stop on your California Central Coast road trip. It won’t take hours to explore. And it may not even be the cleanest. But that is exactly why it is memorable.

Some destinations stay with you because of their history. Others because of their natural beauty. Bubblegum Alley stays with you because it makes you laugh and because, at the end of the day, how many places can you say you’ve visited that are completely covered in chewing gum?

Travel is full of unexpected discoveries, and sometimes the strangest stops become the stories you tell the most.

Bubblegum Alley is weird. It is gross. It is absolutely worth seeing once.

Disgusting, but as you say fascinating! What a bizarre idea. I wonder how it all started.

Probably started on a dare which I’m pretty sure is the beginning of a lot of off the wall things. It’s such a stark contrast to the rest of downtown which is really lovely
