“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”

A great quote from a somewhat tragic person. It’s been a few years since I saw Into the Wild, maybe it’s worth a rewatch.
Sadly so much good art comes from such sadness. I haven’t watched that movie in a long time but maybe it’s time to pull it out again
There is much wisdom in this quote; from someone who had a short and tragic life.
Very true, so sad that when a life is cut short
I have to disagree with Christopher about the “greatest” joy, but I DO agree that an endlessly changing horizon and new daily sun are indeed a great joy! His is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard/seen.
I agree with you- not THE greatest but it’s up there. His really is a sad story of a life cut too short.
Terribly sad, but he did get to live his dream for a while.
The passion and thrill for adventure is definitely a wonderful feeling. But there’s something nice and comforting about the familiarity as well.
So true, we love to go and explore but we also love to come home again 🙂
Great quote but as others have said, with a sad backstory. Have you read the book as well as seen the film? It’s well worth it, as it conveys what drove him there even better than the film did imho
I read the book a long time ago, but I think I need to read it again. The book definitely gave a more insight into his life.
I am feeling rather ignorant and stupid and in a tiny minority here, but I’ve never heard of Christopher McCandless and had to Google him to find out anything at all! I must have missed something somewhere….! Great quote though.
He was an interesting guy who I think would have written some amazing stories of his travels with more time. But a great pearl of wisdom in the quotes that he left behind.
