We have the greatest car ever. Our Honda CRV has been with us for many years, and today we celebrated a huge milestone — the odometer rolled over to 400,000 miles! After so many miles and memories, this car feels less like a vehicle and more like an extension of our family.

Over the years, we’ve replaced a few parts here and there, but never anything major with the engine or transmission. And honestly, the small fixes are nothing compared to the steady reliability this car has given us.

This CRV first belonged to my father-in-law, who logged countless miles for his sales job. It carried him through business meetings, favorite diners, and those charming small towns tucked between the highways.

Then it was passed down to Brad when he moved to Utah — and that’s when it became our car. It carried us on early adventures together, including a random road trip to California, a disastrous night sleeping in Yellowstone, and even survived a collision with a moose.

When we got married, this was the car we drove away in after the ceremony. Just a few days later, it was stuffed full of belongings, hopes, and fears as we moved across the country to start a new life in Florida.

It’s been our companion in moments big and small — from evacuating during Hurricane Dorian to making yet another cross-country move to Tennessee. It’s carried us through countless road trips, and even on international adventures, it’s the car that faithfully delivered us to the airport and welcomed us home.

One of my favorite memories was last year, coming home from France in the middle of the night, completely exhausted. The power started fading, and we weren’t sure we’d make it. But the car held on just long enough to roll into our driveway before giving out. That’s just who this car is — dependable to the very last second.

In daily life, it’s been just as steady: getting us safely where we need to go, carrying groceries, backpacks, dog noses pressed against the windows, and remnants of road trip snacks in the cupholders. It’s messy, lived-in, and absolutely ours.

We did recently let go of our other old car and bought our first new one. But truth be told, I have little interest in driving it. I’ll take our Honda any day — the car that holds our history, our laughter, our chaos, and our love.

This CRV has been there and done that with us, mile after mile. I wouldn’t trade any of those miles or the memories that came with them for anything. And I can’t wait to see where the next hundred thousand will take us.

Here’s to 500,000 miles — and everything in between.

This is such a wonderful post, Meg! Cars aren’t just transport. Cars hold so many memories and are like part of the family! They’re about love, discovery and unforgettable road trips. While I never get attached to material things, I was surprised to find myself sad, almost sentimental when we sold our campervan. We bought the camper when Ericeira was a little over a year old. It was one of those bucket list things that I personally wanted to do since I was a little girl. I thought a lot about why selling it wrecked me so much and realized it’s more than just saying goodbye to this huge passion project that I felt extremely connected to, it’s the loss of my own childhood. It’s the acceptance that now my life revolves around what is right for and works for my children, and sometimes that means letting go of the things that I love the most. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Oh Aiva, that is a perfect and beautiful way to reflect on those transition periods and the items we connect to them. It’s hard to let go of things that were so important to you at such tender times of life. I’m like you, I have never really felt some emotional attachment to a thing like I have this car. When the time comes that we can’t drive this car anymore, I will probably shed many, many tears over it.

Wow! Now that’s impressive! Your car has seen more than most other cars ever will.

Thank you! I love that this car has seen so much more of the country than most other cars. I’m determined to run it for as many miles as I possibly can 🙂

Ah great post Meg, and that’s coming from someone who never passed his test, has never owned a car and doesn’t particularly like being in cars. But I totally relate to the brilliant history and nostalgia you’ve laid out here. Talk about memories… it will indeed be a sad day when your old Honda eventually floats up to the great garage in the sky. But let’s hope that’s not for many years yet. *Raises a glass* “To your Honda! CRV”

Cheers Leighton 🙂 I’m really hoping we can get it to at least 500,000- wouldn’t that be amazing! I have never been much of a car person until this car came along. When that sad day comes that we have to let it go, I will probably be making an unsightly and overemotional display of tears while people around look at me like I’m a crazy person. But this has just been the best car!

You should send this to Honda! It’s a great advertisement for the car and your lifestyle 😊

Oh that’s a great idea! I would happily be a spokesperson for these cars because it has been so great for us 🙂

That’s reliability for you! I’d be loathe to part with the car either as it holds so many memories for you all. Here’s to the next 100!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

You just can’t find anything that reliable these days- it’s a real treasure. Thanks Marion, here’s on to the next 100 🙂

You have a car with 400,000 memories, let alone miles on the clock! It’s part of the family…

It is absolutely part of the family 🙂 I love the idea of it having 400,000 memories as well as miles

This post put a smile on my face; lovely tribute to your car, with so many wonderful memories along the way. We had one too and it was the best car we’ve ever had. It was stolen twice (the second time we didn’t get it back for 6 months), hit twice, but always ran like a champ until it finally died. Here’s to many more miles and memories! 🥂

Honda just makes great cars! It’s amazing that your was stolen twice but that you got it back- that’s so lucky. Hurray for more miles and memories to come 🙂

Wow!! Glad you’ve gotten so much mileage (and many memories) from your car. I can’t believe your car survived being hit by a moose! I’m intrigued by the story!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

The fact that it has been hit by a few deer and a moose and survived is pretty amazing. Brad had just moved to Utah and went up to Idaho for a weekend and was driving along a dark wooden road when the moose came out of nowhere and hit the car. Brad said that the whole windshield was shattered and the side banged up and he ended up stranded there for a few more days while it all got fixed. If it can survive a moose, it can survive anything 🙂

Oh my goodness – wow! It’s lovely how your car is so full of memories and happiness, that’s so important. And to survive a MOOSE, that’s some going!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Right-nothing says grit like surviving a moose! It has been the greatest car and I love that is so full of our life 🙂
