On an impromptu adventure, we made our way to West Virginia for a taste of what makes this the Wild and Wonderful state. As we discovered, the tagline fits perfectly. West Virginia is full of rugged mountains, winding roads, and beautiful natural places that make you want to slow down and explore.
Our first stop during our weekend in the Mountain State was Babcock State Park, a favorite destination for enjoying West Virginia’s scenery. With thousands of acres of forested mountains, winding roads, and peaceful outdoor spaces, the park offered exactly the kind of escape we’d hoped to find.
We drove through the area with the park’s cabins, stopping to admire the incredible views of the surrounding mountains. It didn’t take long for us to understand why people love coming here. Everywhere we looked, there was another stretch of forest or another beautiful view to take in.
From there, we made our way toward the visitor center and one of the park’s most recognizable sights: the Glade Creek Grist Mill.

The Iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill
The Glade Creek Grist Mill is one of the most photographed landmarks in West Virginia, and it’s easy to see why. With the creek flowing nearby and the surrounding forest providing a beautiful backdrop, it feels like a scene pulled straight from another time.
Stone steps lead toward the water, where we could take in the view of the small waterfall and the grist mill. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stop for a while, enjoy the scenery, and take a few photographs before moving on.
I could only imagine how beautiful this spot must be when the surrounding trees are filled with the brilliant colors of fall. Even without the autumn foliage, the setting made a lasting impression on us.
The mill is a replica of the original Cooper’s Mill and is a reminder of an earlier way of life. It’s also the sort of landmark that makes a visit to Babcock memorable, even if you only have a little time to explore.
If you’re planning a visit, I’d make sure to leave time to enjoy the scenery around the mill rather than simply stopping for a quick photograph. The waterfall, creek, and surrounding woods all add to the experience.

Enjoying the Scenery Around Boley Lake
After visiting the grist mill, we made our way to Boley Lake to enjoy a walk along the water.
We chose the short, easy loop that follows the shoreline. The Lake View Trail is about a mile long and offers a relaxed way to experience another side of the park. The trail was easy to follow, with rhododendron bushes lining much of the path.
Walking beside the water, surrounded by greenery and the quiet of the forest, was a lovely way to slow down and enjoy our surroundings. After taking in the mountain views and visiting the busy, popular grist mill area, the walk offered a different perspective on the park’s natural beauty.
It’s easy to see why Babcock State Park is such a popular place to visit. Between the mountain views, the grist mill, and the peaceful walking
