If you are looking for a little Christmas magic in Nashville, you don’t necessarily have to go to a Christmas market or holiday show. Sometimes you can simply walk through the doors of the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center and find yourself surrounded by it.

The Gaylord Opryland Resort is enormous, but what makes it especially memorable isn’t just the hotel rooms, restaurants, and resort amenities. The real attraction for me is the collection of enormous glass atriums filled with gardens, waterways, trees, flowers, waterfalls, and little corners to discover.

And during the Christmas season, all of that gets wrapped in thousands of holiday lights and decorations.

We actually visited in January, after many of the holiday activities had ended. But the Christmas decorations were still up, so we spent an afternoon wandering through the atriums and enjoying the festive atmosphere without the crowds that come during the busiest part of the season.

It turned out to be one of my favorite ways to experience Gaylord Opryland.

Why Visit Gaylord Opryland at Christmas?

Gaylord Opryland is already an unusual place to visit any time of year. Walking through the resort feels almost like stepping outside into a botanical garden, except that you’re still inside a hotel.

There are enormous trees growing beneath glass ceilings, waterways winding between restaurants and shops, bridges crossing over the water, and waterfalls tucked into the landscaping.

Then Christmas arrives. The atriums are decorated with Christmas trees, lights, ornaments, and holiday displays that blend into all that greenery. The result is wonderfully over-the-top without feeling completely disconnected from the natural spaces surrounding it.

During the Christmas season, the resort also offers a long list of holiday activities and events for families. You could easily spend much of a day here taking part in everything. But you don’t have to do all of that to enjoy it. One of my favorite things about Gaylord Opryland is that you can simply wander. And that’s exactly what we did.

Our Winter Visit to Gaylord Opryland

We came to Gaylord Opryland in January, after the main holiday activities had finished. That meant we missed many of the special Christmas events, but the decorations were still in place. For us, that was actually perfect. The crowds had thinned out, and we could take our time walking through the different atriums without feeling like we needed to keep moving.

We started in the central Delta Atrium and slowly made our way through the different sections of the resort. Every time we turned a corner there seemed to be something else to look at.

The resort was originally built in 1977 to accommodate the growing crowds coming to Nashville for the Grand Ole Opry. Over the years, it continued to expand, eventually becoming the massive resort it is today.

Today, it feels like much more than a hotel. It’s a combination of gardens, architecture, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and gathering spaces all underneath enormous glass ceilings. And at Christmas, all of those spaces become part of the holiday experience.

Wandering Through the Delta Atrium

Our first stop was the Delta Atrium, the central and perhaps most recognizable section of Gaylord Opryland.

This atrium has a distinctly Southern feel. Wrought-iron railings line the buildings, while a gentle indoor river winds through the center. Trees, flowers, and other plants fill the spaces along the water, creating the strange sensation that you’re wandering through an outdoor garden even though you’re completely indoors. You can even take a boat ride through the atrium.

During the Christmas season, holiday decorations appear throughout the gardens, tucked among the greenery and along the water. But for me, the real star of the Delta Atrium is the glass ceiling. The enormous ceiling lets natural light pour into the space during the day. At night, the whole thing takes on an entirely different personality when it is illuminated with Christmas lights.

We visited during the day, and while the atrium was beautiful, I couldn’t help wishing we’d been able to see it at night. I can only imagine what it must feel like to stand beneath that enormous glass ceiling surrounded by thousands of twinkling lights.

Exploring the Garden Conservatory

From the Delta Atrium, we made our way to the Garden Conservatory. The atmosphere here felt a little different. The space is filled with plants and gardens, but during the holidays the decorations become much more prominent. Large musical ornaments hung from the glass ceiling, a particularly fitting choice for a Nashville resort.

One of my favorite discoveries was the Christmas tree trail. The trees were decorated around different country music artists, with each one designed to reflect the artist and their music. Visitors could even enter a raffle connected to the displays. It was a fun combination of Christmas and Nashville.

And then there was the banjo-playing snowman. Because apparently a regular snowman wasn’t quite Nashville enough. He was dressed and posed like he was ready to take his place among Music City’s country stars, and he fit perfectly into the slightly whimsical atmosphere of the resort.

This is one of the things I love about Christmas at Gaylord Opryland. The decorations aren’t simply traditional Christmas decorations placed around a hotel. They become part of the identity of the resort and the city around it.

The Cascades Atrium

Of all the atriums, the Cascades Atrium was my favorite. Maybe it was because it felt quieter than the others. Or maybe it was the waterfalls. There are several waterfalls tucked throughout the atrium, and the sound of the water gives the entire space a peaceful atmosphere. Restaurants and gathering spaces surround the gardens, but somehow the area still feels removed from the busier parts of the resort.

After wandering through the larger, more elaborate spaces, the Cascades felt like a place where I could simply sit for a while and enjoy the surroundings. And that’s something I appreciated about exploring Gaylord Opryland. It isn’t just one big spectacle. Each atrium has its own personality.

Christmas Decorations at Gaylord Opryland

Christmas at Gaylord Opryland is definitely a case of more is more. The resort’s enormous scale gives them room to go big with the decorations. Trees rise among the plants and gardens. Ornaments hang from the ceilings. Lights stretch across the glass atriums. And holiday displays appear throughout the resort.

But what makes the decorations particularly beautiful is the contrast between the Christmas displays and the greenery. Instead of putting decorations into an otherwise empty space, Gaylord Opryland has an entire indoor landscape for them to become part of. The Christmas trees tucked among the tropical-looking plants were probably my favorite example of this.

There was something almost surreal about seeing a traditional Christmas tree surrounded by lush greenery beneath a giant glass ceiling.

A Little Gaylord Opryland History

It’s hard to understand the scale of Gaylord Opryland until you know a little about how it came to be. The resort opened in 1977 as a hotel connected to the growing popularity of the Grand Ole Opry.

Nashville was becoming an increasingly popular destination for visitors coming to see the Opry, and the city needed places to accommodate all those guests. The resort continued expanding as Nashville’s popularity grew. At one point, an amusement park even operated nearby before the property eventually became the Opry Mills shopping area.

Today, Gaylord Opryland has become a destination in its own right. People come to stay at the resort, attend conferences and events, enjoy the restaurants and entertainment, and—especially during the holidays—experience the elaborate Christmas season. It’s a pretty remarkable evolution from a hotel built to serve people coming to see a show.

Can You Visit Gaylord Opryland Without Staying There?

Yes, and this is one of the things I think makes Gaylord Opryland such a fun Nashville experience. You don’t have to be staying at the hotel to appreciate the public areas and wander through the atriums. That’s exactly what we did.

We weren’t there for a hotel stay or a particular event. We simply wanted to see the Christmas decorations and explore the atriums. And we could easily spend an afternoon doing exactly that. If you’re visiting Nashville and want something different from the usual downtown attractions, stopping by Gaylord Opryland is an easy way to experience something completely different.

You’re still in Nashville. But once you’re inside those enormous atriums, it doesn’t quite feel like it.

How Much Time Do You Need at Gaylord Opryland?

That really depends on what you want to do. If you’re simply visiting to wander through the atriums and see the decorations, a couple of hours can be plenty of time. That’s essentially what we did.

But if you’re visiting during the full Christmas season and want to participate in the holiday activities, eat at the restaurants, take a boat ride, see the lights, and explore everything the resort offers, you could easily spend an entire day here—or even longer. That’s part of the beauty of Gaylord Opryland. You can make it as simple or elaborate as you want.

Tips for Visiting Gaylord Opryland at Christmas

Visit During the Day for the Gardens. The glass atriums allow an incredible amount of natural light into the resort, making daytime a beautiful time to appreciate the plants, architecture, and gardens.

Come Back After Dark for the Lights. If you have the opportunity, seeing the resort after dark is something I’d love to do on a future visit. The Christmas lights transform the atriums once the sun goes down.

Wear Comfortable Shoes. The resort is huge. Even if you’re simply wandering through the atriums, you’ll cover more ground than you might expect.

Give Yourself Time to Wander.

Don’t feel like you need to follow a strict route. Some of the best discoveries are tucked away in corners or along the waterways.

Check the Holiday Schedule. If you’re specifically coming for Christmas activities, check the current schedule before visiting. Holiday events and attractions can change from year to year, and the decorations may remain after some activities have ended.

Consider Visiting After Christmas. This is actually something our January visit taught me. If your primary goal is seeing the decorations rather than participating in every holiday activity, visiting shortly after Christmas may offer a quieter experience while many of the decorations are still in place. Just be sure to check what remains available before you go.

Is Gaylord Opryland Worth Visiting at Christmas? Absolutely. Even if you aren’t staying at the resort, Gaylord Opryland is worth experiencing simply for the atriums. During Christmas, the gardens, waterways, architecture, and waterfalls take on an entirely different feeling as they’re surrounded by holiday decorations. And because there are several different atriums, you can spend your time wandering from one space to another and discovering something new around every corner.

Our January visit was admittedly a quieter version of Christmas at Gaylord Opryland. We missed the big holiday activities. We didn’t stay at the resort. We didn’t spend days taking part in everything it had to offer. Instead, we simply wandered. And honestly, that was enough.

One of these years, maybe we’ll come back and really do Christmas at Gaylord Opryland. I’d love to stay here, see the atriums lit up at night, take part in the holiday activities, and experience all the things we missed on this visit.

But I’m also glad we experienced it the way we did. There was something lovely about wandering through the resort after the biggest holiday crowds had gone home. The decorations were still there, the gardens were still green, and the waterfalls were still flowing. We didn’t have anywhere we needed to be. We just wandered. And sometimes that’s the best way to experience a place.

Gaylord Opryland may be one of Nashville’s premiere hotels, but you don’t have to spend the night to discover the magic inside. Sometimes all you need is an afternoon, a comfortable pair of shoes, and a little time to wander beneath the glass ceilings. And at Christmas, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find a little holiday magic waiting for you there.
