One of my favorite travel experiences is arriving somewhere with absolutely no expectations and leaving completely charmed by what I find. That was exactly what happened when my friends and I visited Altos de Chavón during a cruise stop in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Many visitors experience Altos de Chavón as a shore excursion from La Romana cruise port, making it one of the easiest cultural attractions to visit while stopping in the area.
We had booked the excursion simply because everyone seemed to recommend it. Beyond that, we knew almost nothing about it. What we discovered was a beautiful hilltop village filled with cobblestone streets, artists’ studios, historic architecture, and some of the best views in the area.
By the end of our visit, Altos de Chavón had become one of our favorite memories from the cruise.

What is Altos de Chavón?
Before visiting, we had no idea what Altos de Chavón actually was. We simply knew that it was one of the most highly recommended things to do in La Romana and decided to trust the advice of those who had visited before us.
What we discovered was a place unlike anything we expected.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Chavón River and the blue waters of the Caribbean, Altos de Chavón is a recreated 16th-century Mediterranean village. Designed by Dominican architect José Antonio Caro and brought to life by local artisans, every stone, pathway, and building was carefully crafted to create the feeling of stepping back in time.
The idea for the village began in 1976 during a road and bridge construction project that left behind large amounts of stone. Rather than let the material go to waste, it was used to build an entirely new village inspired by the architecture of old Mediterranean settlements. Construction was completed in 1980, and today Altos de Chavón has become one of the most visited attractions in the Dominican Republic.
What began as an architectural vision has grown into a cultural center that celebrates art, history, and Dominican creativity.
Wandering the Cobblestone Streets
The best way to experience Altos de Chavón is simply to wander.
The village is a maze of cobblestone streets, stone buildings, hidden courtyards, and scenic overlooks. Around every corner seemed to be another beautiful view or interesting shop waiting to be discovered.
Unlike some tourist attractions where you feel rushed from one highlight to the next, Altos de Chavón invites you to slow down. We found ourselves lingering in small plazas, peeking into boutiques, and stopping frequently just to admire the architecture around us.
The entire village feels thoughtfully designed. Every building, archway, and pathway contributes to the feeling that you have somehow wandered into another place and another time.
As we explored, we quickly understood why so many people consider this a must-see stop while visiting La Romana.
The Heart of the Village: St. Stanislaus Church
At the center of the village stands the beautiful St. Stanislaus Church.
With its simple stone exterior and rust-colored roof tiles, the church serves as both a visual centerpiece and a gathering place within Altos de Chavón. The church was named after Stanislaus of Szczepanów, the patron saint of Poland, in honor of Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Dominican Republic in 1979. During that visit, he gifted relics of the saint to the people of Santo Domingo.
The church’s beauty comes from its simplicity. It doesn’t rely on grand decorations or elaborate architecture. Instead, it feels peaceful and welcoming, perfectly matching the atmosphere of the village around it.
Visitors will often find musicians performing nearby, their music drifting through the square and adding even more charm to the setting.
It is one of those places that naturally draws people in and encourages them to pause for a moment before continuing their exploration.
Art and Creativity Everywhere
One of the things we loved most about Altos de Chavón was how much it celebrates local artists and creativity.
Throughout the village are galleries, studios, and workshops where visitors can see artists at work. Walking through these spaces gives you a glimpse into the creativity and craftsmanship that continues to thrive in the Dominican Republic.
Altos de Chavón is also home to a design school that attracts aspiring artists from around the world. Combined with the village’s archaeological museum, the area creates a unique blend of artistic expression and cultural heritage.
It never felt like a place that existed solely for tourists. Instead, it felt like a living community where art and culture continue to be an important part of daily life.
Seeing artists actively creating their work added an authenticity that made the experience even more memorable.
My favorite moment was standing atop the bell tower and looking out over the river while the sounds of the village drifted up from below.
The Amphitheater With a View
On the far side of the village sits one of Altos de Chavón’s most impressive features: a Roman-style amphitheater.
Built into the hillside, the amphitheater can seat more than 5,000 people and has hosted an impressive list of performers over the years. Artists such as Frank Sinatra, Santana, Heart, Michael Bublé, and Ricky Martin have all taken the stage here.
Standing inside the amphitheater, it is easy to imagine the energy of a live performance filling the space.
The setting itself is remarkable. With the surrounding landscape stretching out beyond the stage, it feels like a venue designed as much for the scenery as it is for the music.
Like so much of Altos de Chavón, the amphitheater combines beauty, culture, and creativity in a way that feels completely natural.

There are plenty of beautiful places in the Caribbean, but Altos de Chavón stands apart because it offers something more than just beautiful scenery.

What surprised us most was how quickly Altos de Chavón won us over. We arrived knowing almost nothing about it and left wondering how we had never heard of it before.
Know Before You Go: Altos de Chavón
Location. Altos de Chavón is located near La Romana in the Dominican Republic and is a popular excursion for cruise passengers visiting the area.
Wear Comfortable Shoes. The cobblestone streets add to the village’s charm but can be uneven in places.
Allow Time to Explore. The village is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Leave plenty of time to browse the shops, galleries, and scenic overlooks.
Bring Your Camera. Between the stone architecture, river views, church, and amphitheater, this is one of the most photogenic locations in the region.
Don’t Rush Through. Some of our favorite moments came simply from wandering the streets and taking in the atmosphere rather than seeking out specific attractions.
Travel has a way of rewarding curiosity. Sometimes the places we research for months become highlights of a trip, and sometimes a place we know almost nothing about ends up stealing the show. Altos de Chavón was that kind of place for us.
What began as a simple excursion from La Romana became one of our favorite memories from the Dominican Republic. Long after we left the village behind, we still remembered the sound of music drifting through the square, the artists creating in their studios, and the views stretching out over the river below.
It was a beautiful reminder that the best discoveries are often the ones we never planned for.
