After spending our first day settling into Monteverde and watching the clouds roll across the mountains, we were eager to experience the famous cloud forest for ourselves. While Costa Rica is known for adventure activities like zip lining, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and canyoning, there are just as many ways to experience the country’s incredible landscapes at a slower pace.

Because we were traveling with our daughter, we opted for some of Selvatura Adventure Park’s more family-friendly experiences. Nestled high in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Selvatura offers visitors the chance to walk among the canopy, observe wildlife up close, and learn about the unique ecosystem that makes this region so special.

Having arranged a tour through our hotel, we climbed aboard a shuttle early in the morning and made our way up the winding mountain roads toward the park. Anticipation grew with every turn. For the day, we had signed up for three experiences: the hanging bridges, the sloth sanctuary, and the butterfly garden.

When we arrived, we were immediately welcomed by brightly colored tropical flowers blooming outside the park’s restaurant—a fitting introduction to a day spent surrounded by the incredible beauty of Costa Rica’s cloud forest.

About Selvatura Adventure Park

Located in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Selvatura Adventure Park offers visitors a variety of ways to experience one of Costa Rica’s most unique ecosystems. While many visitors come for the zip lines and adventure activities, the park also offers family-friendly experiences including hanging bridges, wildlife exhibits, and educational attractions that allow visitors to explore the cloud forest at a slower pace.

Walking Among the Clouds: Selvatura’s Hanging Bridges

Our first adventure of the day was the hanging bridge trail, a series of suspended walkways that would take us high into the canopy of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The hanging bridge trail includes approximately eight suspension bridges and several miles of walking through the cloud forest canopy.

From the moment we stepped onto the trail, it felt as though we were being swallowed by the forest. Every surface seemed alive. Trees were draped in vines, moss clung to every branch, and countless plants grew on top of other plants in a seemingly endless display of green. The cloud forest is famous for its biodiversity, and it didn’t take long to understand why.

The trail gradually climbed higher through the forest, leading us across eight hanging bridges along the way. Each bridge offered a different perspective of the canopy. Sometimes we found ourselves surrounded by towering trees, while other times we could look out across layers of forest stretching toward the mountains.

What amazed us most was the feeling of being in the middle of the forest rather than simply looking at it. At times there were trees below us, trees beside us, and trees reaching even higher above us. Every bridge revealed a new angle and a new reason to stop and take it all in.

Then the clouds arrived.

Wisps of mist drifted through the trees and across the bridges, transforming an already beautiful experience into something almost magical. This was the cloud forest at its finest. The shifting clouds moved silently through the canopy, appearing and disappearing among the branches as though the forest itself were breathing.

Because we were visiting at the beginning of the rainy season, most of the flowers had already finished blooming. Still, every so often a bright splash of color would emerge from the sea of green, drawing our attention before disappearing back into the landscape.

The trail eventually led us to the highest bridge on the route. Standing there, we found ourselves looking out over the tops of the trees and trying to comprehend just how far we had climbed. The forest stretched below us in every direction while the mountains rose beyond. Of all the bridges along the trail, this one was our favorite. There was something unforgettable about standing above the canopy and feeling as though we were almost touching the sky.

Eventually we made our way back down through the forest, still marveling at the views and replaying our favorite moments from the trail. By the time we returned to the visitor center, we understood why the hanging bridges are one of Monteverde’s most popular experiences.

We finished the morning with lunch at the restaurant while we waited for the next part of our day to begin.

Meeting the Residents of the Sloth Sanctuary

After lunch, we made our way to the sloth sanctuary for what would become one of the most memorable parts of the day.

The moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted by one of the sanctuary’s residents. Curled around part of the building’s structure, the sloth regarded us with mild curiosity before deciding we were not nearly interesting enough to stay awake for.

Apparently, sloths making themselves at home in unexpected places is nothing new.

Our guide shared a story from the sanctuary’s early days. On only the second day after opening, one of the sloths seemingly disappeared. Staff searched every enclosure and every corner of the building for hours before finally looking up. There, perched at the very top of the structure, was the missing sloth quietly observing the commotion below. There was nothing to do but wait for it to make its slow journey back down.

Today, the sanctuary is home to 13 two-toed sloths, all of whom were rescued from situations where they would have struggled to survive in the wild. Most arrived when they were only two or three months old. The residents are all female and, according to our guide, generally live together quite peacefully despite the occasional disagreement.

As we moved through the sanctuary, we watched the sloths navigate the structures built throughout their habitat. Every movement was slow, deliberate, and purposeful. They climbed hand over hand along branches and ropes, occasionally hanging upside down by their feet to reach food placed in bowls throughout the enclosure.

The most exciting moments came when a sloth made its way directly above the walkway. Standing beneath them, we were able to appreciate just how unique these animals are. Their movements may be slow, but there is an incredible strength and grace in the way they navigate their world.

In this protected environment, many of the sloths can live 40 to 50 years—far longer than they typically would in the wild. While sloths are not currently endangered, sanctuaries like this provide a safe home for animals that cannot be successfully returned to their natural habitat while also giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about them.

By the end of our visit, there was no question that everyone had fallen in love with these gentle creatures.

There was something wonderfully peaceful about simply standing still and watching them move, eat, nap, and go about their day at their own unhurried pace. In a world that often feels rushed, the sloths seemed to offer a quiet reminder that not everything needs to happen quickly.

A Walk Through the Butterfly Garden

Our final stop of the day was the butterfly garden, a peaceful and colorful ending to our time at Selvatura.

As we entered the enclosure, we found ourselves surrounded by butterflies moving gracefully through the air. We wandered slowly along the paths, watching where we stepped and pausing whenever one of the butterflies decided to briefly land on a shoulder or arm before continuing on its way.

Throughout the garden were wooden display cabinets filled with rows of chrysalises in various stages of development. Some were still and unchanged, while others revealed hints of the butterfly waiting inside.

We stood watching as newly emerged butterflies slowly worked their way free from their chrysalises. One by one they released their final hold on the cocoon and began their first flights through the garden. It was fascinating to witness a transformation that often happens unseen in nature.

One of the highlights was seeing one of Costa Rica’s famous blue morpho butterflies emerge and begin drying its wings. Though they are often seen fluttering through the forest, watching the process from the very beginning gave us a new appreciation for these remarkable creatures.

There is something undeniably beautiful about being surrounded by so many butterflies. The garden felt calm and almost dreamlike after the excitement of the hanging bridges and the delight of the sloth sanctuary.

As we watched butterflies drift from flower to flower, it was hard not to think about the symbolism they carry. Their journey from caterpillar to butterfly serves as a reminder that change is often part of growth, and that some of life’s most beautiful moments come after periods of transformation.

It was a fitting way to end a day spent discovering the wonders of Costa Rica’s cloud forest.

Why Selvatura is Great for Families

One of the things we appreciated most about Selvatura Adventure Park was how many ways there were to experience the cloud forest beyond the more extreme adventure activities. While zip lining and other adrenaline-filled experiences are certainly popular, families traveling with younger children can still enjoy a full day immersed in the beauty of Monteverde.

The hanging bridges offered just enough adventure to feel exciting while remaining accessible for a wide range of ages. The sloth sanctuary and butterfly garden gave us opportunities to slow down, learn about local wildlife, and see animals up close that we might not have spotted in the wild.

What we loved most was that the day felt educational without feeling like a lesson. Every stop encouraged curiosity and wonder, whether it was watching clouds drift through the canopy, observing a sloth climb across a branch, or seeing a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis.

For families looking to experience the Monteverde Cloud Forest together, Selvatura offers a wonderful balance of adventure, wildlife, and learning.

Know Before You Go: Selvatura Adventure Park

Allow Plenty of Time. Even if you are only visiting the hanging bridges, it is easy to spend several hours exploring the trails and stopping for photos. If you plan to visit multiple attractions within the park, consider setting aside most of the day.

Dress for Changing Weather. Monteverde’s weather can change quickly. We experienced sunshine, clouds, and mist all within the same day. Layers and a light rain jacket are always a good idea.

Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes. The hanging bridge trail includes several miles of walking along paved and natural paths. Good walking or hiking shoes will make the experience much more enjoyable.

Bring a Camera. The views from the bridges are incredible, and the wildlife exhibits provide opportunities to photograph animals and butterflies up close.

Don’t Rush. Some of the best moments of our visit happened when we simply stopped and looked around. Whether it was watching clouds drift through the forest or observing a sloth move overhead, Selvatura is a place best experienced at a slower pace.

Stunning Meg. Sloths are just the cutest animals. The hanging bridges are beautiful and must have been awesome being amongst the clouds.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Thank you! Walking on the bridges was amazing, it really felt like we could reach out and touch the sky. And to see so many sloths in one place was a favorite for sure 🙂

  2. Toonsarah Avatar

We loved this place as much as you did! Yes, walking across those bridges is magical and the butterflies so pretty 🙂 You’ve brought back some great memories for me. But we didn’t get to visit the sloth sanctuary unfortunately – it wasn’t included in our tour and we hadn’t thought to bring extra cash to pay for additional activities. I would have loved to get this close to them! However we did see some in the wild near Arenal, so I know how easy it is to fall for them 😀

Yay for a shared location! Magical is right, I loved feeling so consumed by the forest. I wish we could have seen some sloths in the wild but seeing them at the sancuary was great 🙂

I don’t usually like to ‘plug’ my own blog but here are my sloths if you’d like to see them: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/the-oddities-of-sloths/

Thank you! More sloths is always appreciated. My daughter especially will love to see them 🙂

I can see why you enjoyed this place. Sloths are so cute and gentle, and how neat to walk across the top of a rainforest among the clouds! What a unique experience.

It was amazing to feel so surrounded by forest and clouds. And the sloths were so delightful with their slow and gentle movements. We have really loved it here 🙂

Isn’t it just a fabulous place. As you say, Meg, the sight of all of the mosses and other plants growing on/clinging to/hanging from the trees is otherworldly. It’s a wonderful place. We saw so so many sloths in the wild during our trip, particularly in Manuel Antonio and Cahuita. Every single sighting is a special moment. Loved those hanging bridges, glad you all loved them too…great way to see the forest canopy. (Btw, we did do the zip wires, but in La Fortuna later in the trip….oh my God it’s brilliant, hope you get to do it one day).

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Fabulous is right! We would have loved to see some sloths in the wild, but the sancuary was fun to see so many in one place. I think there is so much more of Costa Rica we want to see, so many other areas that now were aching to explore. Our next visit will definitely include a zipline because they look amazing 🙂

  5. Monkey's Tale Avatar

You had much better weather than us in the cloud forest. It was a constant downpour. It looks so much nicer on your trip 😊 Great sloth pics too! You can’t not love them. Maggie

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

I have loved the rain storms but if it were constant I wouldnt love it nearly as much. Youre right, you cant help but love sloths and their slow gentle ways 🙂

  8. The Travel Architect Avatar

I think I’d prefer these activities to the more “exciting” ones. This looks like a grand day out! It does make me wonder what a sloth fight looks like. Is it in super slow motion? 🙂

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

When our guide said that about sloth fights I honestly laughed out loud. Just the thought of such slow moving creatures fighting is hilarious. It made for a great day all around. 🙂

  9. WanderingCanadians Avatar

The hanging bridges seem like a great way to enjoy the Cloud Forest and see all the greenery from a different perspective. As someone who loves sloths, I couldn’t get enough of your pictures of them from your visit to the sloth sanctuary!!! They are so adorable!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Thank you, we really loved seeing all the sloths and were near giddy with each slow movement forward. The cloud forest was truly spectacular all around 🙂

  10. Little Miss Traveller Avatar

What an adventure Meg. I adore walking across those elevated rainforest bridges too.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Thanks Marion, it was a fantastic adventure! Nothing better than walking in the clouds on top of the world 🙂

I think I would have gone for your itinerary and we don’t even have the excuse of having a ten year old girl 😉 (Well, we may have been tempted into the horse riding). The hanging bridges, the scenery, the cloud wisps and virtually everything about your hike looks spectacular. The sloth sanctuary looks marvellous too, seeing these amazing animals close up is definitely something that’s on our list. I had no idea they can live for so long, given the right environment. Brilliant shot of Tess looking up between a pair of sloths. I’ve seen a few butterfly gardens in my time and we love them, so I’d be up for this too. Cocoon cabinets are so fascinating.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Thank you Leighton 🙂 we really loved seeing the sloths and when they were right above her she was ecstatic with excitement… to be fair, the adults would have been too. I had never seen a real butterfly garden before. I was amazed at the cabinets and that could watch them emerge from the cocoon.

  12. travelling_han Avatar

We didn’t do any of the ‘adrenaline’ stuff either, we found just the wildlife, great people, food, drink and rainforests were more than enough to keep us busy for 2 weeks 🙂 Your photos of the bridges are beautiful, brings back the happiest of memories for me too.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

How great to spend two weeks there! Great people, great food, and great scenery. We are already thinking that we would love to go back and see more of it. 🙂
