Arriving in Monteverde & Discovering Pura Vida {Costa Rica}

Some places take time to grow on you. Monteverde is not one of them.

From the moment we arrived, there was something about the cool mountain air, the endless green hills, and the welcoming spirit of the people that made us feel at home. We had come to Costa Rica ready for a week of adventure with my family, but before we could explore cloud forests, hanging bridges, and wildlife reserves, we first had to make our way into the mountains.

Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s most popular mountain destinations, known for its cloud forests, abundant wildlife, adventure parks, and commitment to conservation. While many visitors head straight for the beaches, Monteverde offers a completely different side of Costa Rica—one defined by misty forests, cool mountain air, and a deep connection to nature.

As it turned out, the journey to Monteverde would become one of our first memorable experiences in Costa Rica.

Arriving in Costa Rica

We landed in Liberia ready to begin our week in Costa Rica. After collecting our luggage, we walked out of the small airport and found the representative holding a sign for our rental car company. He drove us a short distance down the road to pick up our vehicle and get us on our way.

While completing the paperwork, the employee asked what our plans were.

When we told him we were heading to Monteverde, he gave us one piece of advice: leave before noon.

If we didn’t, he said, we should wait until the following morning.

At the time, we didn’t understand why there would be such a strict time frame, but it was still morning, so we started driving.

The Drive to Monteverde

A few hours later, we reached the foothills and began climbing toward Monteverde.

The road wound through small towns where homes sat close to the street and daily life unfolded right before our eyes. One of my favorite parts of travel is seeing those ordinary moments that make a place feel real.

As we continued upward, the roads became narrower and more winding. Some sections were rocky and filled with potholes that required careful maneuvering. The drive demanded attention, but it also rewarded us with incredible views.

Everywhere we looked there were rolling mountains, deep valleys, and layers upon layers of green forest stretching toward the horizon.

The higher we climbed, the more we realized why Monteverde has become one of Costa Rica’s most beloved destinations.

Exploring the Town of Monteverde

Monteverde would serve as our home base for the next several days.

After checking in and dropping off our luggage, we set out to explore the town.

One of the first things we noticed was how often people greeted us with the phrase “Pura Vida” (pronounced poo-rah vee-dah).

We quickly learned that “Pura Vida” is much more than a greeting. It can mean hello, goodbye, thank you, you’re welcome, or simply an expression of appreciation for life. More than anything, it reflects a mindset of positivity and gratitude that seems woven into daily life throughout Costa Rica.

Monteverde immediately felt welcoming.

The town has a creative, artistic personality, with colorful buildings, local shops, and restaurants tucked into the hillsides. Everywhere we went, people were friendly and eager to help.

In the center of town stands St. Helen’s Church, a simple but beautiful landmark that serves as an important gathering place for the community. While it isn’t the grandest church we would see during our travels, it felt like the heart of the town.

One of Monteverde’s most recognizable restaurants is the Tree House Restaurant, built around a massive living tree that rises through the middle of the building. We loved seeing the winding staircase disappear into the branches overhead and couldn’t imagine a more fitting restaurant for a town surrounded by cloud forest.

When the Clouds Arrive

Later in the afternoon, we noticed clouds moving quickly across the mountains.

A local explained that rain often falls near the coast during the day and that the clouds drift upward into the mountains, sometimes covering the entire town in a remarkably short amount of time.

Suddenly the warning from the rental car employee made perfect sense.

Monteverde, Costa Rica

Within an hour, the views that had stretched for miles disappeared behind a wall of mist. The mountains vanished, the valleys disappeared, and we could barely see beyond the balcony of our room.

It was our first introduction to life in a cloud forest.

The changing weather wasn’t an inconvenience—it was part of the experience.

Discovering “Pura Vida”

As evening settled over Monteverde, we sat on the balcony enjoying the cool mountain air and watching the clouds roll past.

“Pura Vida” literally translates to “pure life,” but after only a few hours in Monteverde, it felt like much more than a phrase. It was a way of approaching the world—slowing down, appreciating the beauty around you, and finding joy in simple moments.

Even with the mountains hidden behind the clouds, it was impossible not to feel drawn into that way of thinking.

And if our first day in Monteverde was any indication, we were in for an unforgettable week in Costa Rica.

Know Before You Go: Driving to Monteverde

Leave Early. Mountain weather changes quickly in Monteverde. Locals recommended arriving before afternoon clouds and rain move into the area, and after seeing how quickly visibility disappeared, we completely understand why.

Expect Winding Roads. The drive into Monteverde includes steep grades, sharp curves, and sections that can be rough depending on road conditions. Drive slowly and allow extra time.

Pack Layers. One of the biggest surprises for us was how much cooler Monteverde felt compared to the lowlands. Even in Costa Rica, evenings in the mountains can be cool.

Embrace the Weather. Clouds, mist, and rain are part of what makes the cloud forest ecosystem so special. Don’t let changing weather discourage you—it is all part of the Monteverde experience.

Learn a Little ‘Pura Vida’. You’ll hear the phrase everywhere. While it literally means “pure life,” it also reflects the welcoming spirit and positive outlook that make Costa Rica such a special place to visit.

Our first day in Monteverde taught us that Costa Rica is as much about slowing down and embracing the moment as it is about checking destinations off a list. Between the mountain views, the rolling clouds, and the warm welcome of “Pura Vida,” we had already fallen a little in love with this corner of the country.

And with cloud forests, wildlife, and new adventures waiting ahead, it felt like our Costa Rica story was only just beginning.

Over the next several days, Monteverde would be our gateway to cloud forests, wildlife sanctuaries, hanging bridges, coffee farms, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Costa Rica.

Oh this is going to be so interesting to follow you through the parts of that wonderful country which we travelled through a couple of years ago. It’s fabulous! We got unbelievably lucky in Monteverde/Sant Elena and had bright sunshine all day every day…which doesn’t happen too often. Excited to follow your trip. Pura Vida!

I must admit, I went back to reread your posts from this area to get ready. How lucky to have sunshine all day while you were here. Although I do love watching those clouds roll in everyday while we pull out card games and cups of coffee/tea. Pura Vida! 🙂

Your first day was filled with so many amazing experiences! The huge change in the weather must have been really wild. The shades of greens in the mountains are so varied and intense; Mother Nature’s finest! And the treehouse restaurant looks like a very entertaining experience, for adults and kids. I can’t wait to hear more of your Costa Rican adventures. Pura Vida Meg!

Thank you! Its incredible to see so many layers of green everywhere. At first we were a little discouraged about the daily change in weather, but we are finding that we love going adventuring in the morning and then pulling out card games while we watch the clouds roll in. We decided we cant leave without dinner one night at the Treehouse. Pura Vida to you too 🙂

Great photos of the spectacular views around Monteverde! I was interested to read and compare with our visit. The town you call Monteverde looks very like where we stayed but that was called Sant Elena. Are there two names for the same place or are they really that alike?!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

I think it might be Sant Elena that we are staying in, but everyone has also called it Monteverde so I think it goes by both. No matter what its called it sure is incredible here! I just love the views, the rolling clouds, and especially the people 🙂

The views of the lush landscape along the drive are beautiful. Monteverde looks and sounds so inviting. I don’t know if I could handle rain everyday though! But at least it’s typically in the afternoon so you can plan around it.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Planning around the rain wasnt bad, we would go off and do things in the morning and then enjoy watching the clouds roll in with a cup of tea. It was amazing 🙂

I feel there are some really special experiences coming your way Meg, in addition to this already brilliant opening episode. The town’s vibe jumps off the page straight away, particularly with that photo of the low-hanging clouds. Magical. What atmospheric balcony views this will make for with a drink. The Treehouse Restaurant looks very cool, how was the food? Pura vida!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Oh it was cool to watch those.clouds roll in with a drink every day. We have definitely had some amazing moments and experiences here. We got to walk up through the tree at restaurant but didnt get to eat there. We ate at places all over town and they were all great. But the treehouse never seemed to be open when we tried to eat there. Oh well, it just means we will have to come back again. Pura Vida!
