We’ve been soaking in the festivities of the season over the past few weeks, with days filled with family gatherings, time with friends, holiday parties at work and school, and as many seasonal celebrations as we can possibly fit in.
Even with the busy pace, I’ve really loved this stretch of time. The people and experiences that fill these days are what make the season feel so meaningful. Getting to see family and friends is always special, and every mile traveled to spend time together has felt well worth it.
This year, I’ve been especially intentional about not getting caught up in the rush of holiday to-do lists, and instead focusing on simply enjoying the moments as they come. Time together—whether it’s a simple outing or a planned experience—always feels more meaningful to me than anything wrapped under a tree.
This season has taken us across Tennessee and into some of the surrounding states, collecting small moments of light, laughter, and holiday magic along the way.
So to share a little of that joy, here is a festive collection of holiday experiences and places to enjoy this season.

Holiday Experiences
Barrel Tree Lighting at Jack Daniels Distillery {Tennessee}
Our first holiday experience of the season was the annual Barrel Tree Lighting at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, and it has quickly become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holidays.
The evening begins with live music as fiddles and banjos play while crowds gather around the towering stack of barrels, waiting for the sun to set. There’s a festive energy in the air that builds as the light slowly fades over the hills of Lynchburg.

Jack Daniel’s Distillery is one of Tennessee’s most iconic landmarks, drawing visitors from all over to see where Jack Daniel built his distillery. The distillery famously survived Prohibition and, in many ways, found ways to thrive during that era. Today, it still sits in a dry county, and tastings are only possible thanks to a unique legal exception tied to an agricultural law.

As night falls, everyone gathers together for the countdown to the lighting. Instead of counting down from ten, the crowd counts down from seven in honor of Jack Daniel’s famous Old No. 7.
When the countdown ends, the entire barrel tree comes alive with glowing lights wrapped around garlands of greenery. The result is a warm, festive display that feels both traditional and distinctly Tennessee.
It’s safe to say that regular holiday tree lightings just don’t quite compare to the Barrel Tree lighting at Jack Daniel’s Distillery.

Enchanted Garden of Light at Rock City Gardens {Georgia}
One of our favorite places to visit any time of year is Rock City Gardens. Perched high atop Lookout Mountain, the gardens wind through towering rock formations, narrow passageways, suspension bridges, and hidden caverns carved naturally into the landscape.
Every season offers something special, but during the holidays the entire space transforms into the Enchanted Garden of Lights.

We especially love the more adventurous parts of the gardens—the narrow slot canyons where visitors have to carefully slide sideways through the rock, and the long staircases that seem to descend deeper and deeper into the heart of the mountain. During the holiday season, all of these pathways are lined with glowing lights that make the already dramatic landscape feel even more magical.

While daytime visits are known for their sweeping views that stretch across seven states and the famous waterfall hidden within the rocks, nighttime visits offer something entirely different. At night, the focus shifts from long-range views to the immediate beauty of light reflecting off stone, tunnels, and winding garden paths.

For families, the experience is especially festive. Younger visitors can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus along the route and even decorate gingerbread cookies as part of the holiday activities.
The result is a version of Rock City Gardens that feels both familiar and completely transformed—an immersive walk through light, stone, and holiday wonder.

Smoky Mountain Christmas at Dollywood {Tennessee}
Our next holiday experience took us into the Smoky Mountains for a day at Dollywood, one of Tennessee’s most beloved destinations.
The park was created by Dolly Parton, who left home at a young age and went on to become a global music icon. Even with all of her success, she never forgot her roots in the Smoky Mountains. Dollywood reflects that deep connection to home, family, and Appalachian tradition—especially during the Christmas season.

At Christmas, the park transforms into Smoky Mountain Christmas, filling the air with the sights, sounds, and scents of a simpler holiday time. Between rides and attractions, visitors can watch traditional crafts being demonstrated by blacksmiths, glass blowers, and woodworkers, each sharing a glimpse of the skills that shaped mountain life.
One of the most meaningful stops is Dolly’s childhood cabin, a simple mountain home where she grew up with her 11 siblings. During the holiday season, it is decorated modestly, reflecting the warmth and love of a large family in a small space.

When night falls, the entire park changes again.
Lights begin to glow across the mountainside, and the energy shifts from daytime excitement to something more magical and reflective. One of our favorite experiences was a walking light trail where it felt as though we were moving through waves of color and light. The displays would shift and flow overhead while music faded in and out, creating a fully immersive holiday atmosphere.
We eventually found a bench and simply sat to take it all in.

Throughout the park, the combination of lights, carolers singing at the on-site chapel, and the smell of fresh cinnamon bread made the entire evening feel like a complete holiday experience. The thrill of the rides was replaced by a different kind of excitement—one rooted in atmosphere, tradition, and shared joy.
Even if amusement parks or Dolly Parton aren’t usually your thing, there is something undeniably special about Dollywood at Christmas that feels welcoming to everyone.

Dancing Lights of Christmas at Wilson County Fairgrounds {Tennessee}
This year, I’ve been teaching a class on U.S. Culture and Education, and as a final class activity, we took a field trip to the Wilson County Fairgrounds to experience their annual drive-through light display: Dancing Lights of Christmas.
We arrived shortly after dark and immediately found ourselves at the end of a long line of cars, a clear sign of just how popular this holiday tradition has become.
Once we finally entered the display, we drove into what felt like a fully immersive world of light and motion. The route stretches for miles—nearly three miles of synchronized light installations—each section carefully timed to music playing through a dedicated radio station.
The music was upbeat and festive, and it was incredible to watch how precisely the lights were choreographed to match each song. Entire tunnels of light, glowing arches, and massive animated displays all shifted in perfect rhythm as we slowly drove through.

One of the most delightful surprises was how much personality the displays had. Snowmen, Christmas trees, and stars with faces seemed to sing along with the music, adding a playful, almost storybook quality to the entire experience.
It was one of those rare displays where the scale alone is impressive, but the real wonder comes from the engineering behind it—the coordination, timing, and creativity required to bring something this large to life.
It’s safe to say that photos simply can’t capture the full experience of the Dancing Lights of Christmas at Wilson County Fairgrounds.
Patti’s 1880s Settlement at Land Between the Lakes {Kentucky}
Our final holiday stop took us to the far southern corner of Kentucky for a visit to Patti’s 1880’s Settlement, located just outside the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area along the Tennessee–Kentucky border.
Patti’s 1880’s Settlement is a charming collection of buildings designed to evoke the feeling of a late 1800s settlement. The grounds include small specialty shops, a chapel that is often used for weddings, a miniature golf course, a candy shop filled with old-fashioned sweets, and play areas for children. It feels like stepping into a small recreated village built around nostalgia and tradition.

At the heart of the settlement is the main restaurant, which has become an icon of the region. The wooden building is beautifully designed, with warm interiors that feel like an elegant meeting house from another era. Each room is carefully decorated with attention to detail, adding to the overall sense of stepping back in time.

During the holiday season, the atmosphere becomes even more festive. Servers dress in period-style uniforms decorated with cardinals and holly, and the ceilings are filled with hanging ornaments that make the entire space feel warm and celebratory.
While the setting alone is worth the visit, the food is what truly draws people in. Patti’s is especially known for its famous flower pot bread served with strawberry butter—a signature dish that has become part of the experience itself.
Ending our holiday travels here felt like the perfect note to close on: good food, warm company, and a space that celebrates both tradition and seasonal joy.

Looking back at all of these holiday experiences, what stands out most is not just the lights, music, or places themselves, but the people we shared them with along the way. From glowing drive-through displays and mountain light trails to historic settlements and small-town traditions, each stop added its own kind of warmth to the season.
It’s easy to get caught up in how busy this time of year can be, but these moments were a reminder that the holidays are really about stepping into experiences together, slowing down enough to enjoy them, and finding a little bit of joy wherever the season takes you.
