Jack Daniel’s Barrel Tree Lighting: One of Tennessee’s Most Unique Christmas Traditions {Tennessee}

The holiday season is filled with Christmas tree lightings. Cities large and small gather in town squares, parks, and community centers to welcome the season with twinkling lights and festive celebrations.

But only in Tennessee can you find a Christmas tree made entirely of whiskey barrels.

When we heard about the annual Barrel Tree Lighting at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, we knew we had to experience it for ourselves. What we expected was a unique Christmas tree. What we found was something even better—a holiday tradition centered on community, music, and small-town hospitality.

Years later, it remains one of our favorite ways we have ever welcomed the Christmas season.

A Tennessee Tradition Unlike Any Other

The Jack Daniel Distillery is one of the most recognizable destinations in Tennessee. Visitors travel from around the world to tour the distillery, learn about the whiskey-making process, and experience the history of one of America’s most iconic brands.

The story began with Jasper “Jack” Daniel, who learned the art of whiskey making at a young age before eventually establishing his own distillery in Lynchburg. Using the natural spring water of the Tennessee hills, he built what would become one of the most famous whiskey brands in the world.

Today, the distillery remains closely tied to the town of Lynchburg. While visitors often come for the history and tours, the Barrel Tree Lighting offers a chance to experience a different side of the community—one focused on gathering together to celebrate the holiday season.

Arriving at the Barrel Tree Lighting & Meeting Whiskey Santa

As we made our way through Lynchburg, it quickly became clear that this was more than just a tourist attraction. Families, employees, and local residents gathered together, creating an atmosphere that felt welcoming and festive from the moment we arrived.

The crowd wandered through the distillery grounds enjoying the holiday decorations and visiting with friends and neighbors. There was an easy sense of camaraderie that seemed to bring everyone together.

Southern hospitality was on full display as strangers exchanged smiles, conversations, and Christmas wishes.

And then there was Whiskey Santa. No Tennessee Christmas celebration would be complete without a little local flair.

Among the crowd was Whiskey Santa, a uniquely Lynchburg version of the man in red. He happily greeted visitors and posed for photos, adding another layer of fun to an already festive evening.

It was one of those small details that made the event feel distinctly Tennessee.

More Than A Distillery

One thing that stood out to us throughout the evening was the pride people felt in being part of the Jack Daniel’s community.

Many of the people attending were employees of the distillery, and several longtime employees spoke before the lighting ceremony began. They shared stories of decades spent working there, reflecting on friendships, traditions, and the community they had built together.

Jack Daniel’s is known around the world for its whiskey, but in Lynchburg it is also known as a place where generations of families have worked and built their lives.

Listening to these stories gave the evening a deeper meaning. This wasn’t simply a company hosting a holiday event. It felt like a community gathering to celebrate another year together.

Counting Down From Seven

As dusk settled over the distillery, everyone gathered around the barrel tree.

The towering structure stood waiting in the center of the crowd, built from stacked whiskey barrels and decorated with garlands and lights. Even unlit, it was an impressive sight.

A local fiddle and banjo band entertained the crowd while everyone waited for the big moment. When they launched into “Rocky Top,” the crowd responded with enthusiastic cheers and singing.

The excitement continued to build as darkness settled across Lynchburg.

Then came the countdown. Unlike most Christmas tree lightings, this one did not begin at ten. Instead, the crowd counted down from seven in honor of Jack Daniel’s famous Old No. 7.

The lights flickered on, and suddenly the barrel tree was glowing against the night sky.

There was an audible sense of wonder throughout the crowd as everyone paused to take in the moment. Who would have guessed that a stack of whiskey barrels could become such a beautiful Christmas tree?

The Magic of Small Town Christmas Traditions

After the lighting, people lingered around the tree taking photos, visiting with friends, and simply enjoying the moment.

What stood out most to us was how friendly everyone was. People offered to take photos for strangers, wished one another Merry Christmas, and shared in the excitement of the evening.

The event felt less like a production and more like a community tradition.

In a season that can sometimes feel rushed and commercialized, there was something refreshing about gathering together for a simple celebration centered on music, lights, and friendship.

Content Note: We attended the Barrel Tree Lighting several years ago. Since then, the celebration has expanded to include additional holiday festivities throughout the day. Be sure to check the latest event details before planning your visit.

Over the years, we have visited many Christmas light displays, holiday festivals, and seasonal events. Some were bigger. Some were flashier. Some had thousands more lights.

Yet this small gathering in Lynchburg remains one of our favorites.

The Barrel Tree Lighting reminded us that Christmas magic is not always found in the biggest displays or the most elaborate productions. Sometimes it is found in live music, friendly strangers, local traditions, and a community coming together to celebrate the season.

It wasn’t just about seeing a Christmas tree made from whiskey barrels. It was about experiencing the warmth, hospitality, and sense of belonging that surrounded it.

Years later, when we think back on Christmas experiences that truly captured the spirit of the season, this small-town celebration in Lynchburg is one of the first that comes to mind.

Thanks for joining us for the annual Barrel Tree Lighting at Jack Daniels Distillery. May your lights be bright, your community be warm, and your whiskey be smooth this holiday season.

Ah Meg, it’s good to see the old place again. My visit here in 2010 feels so long ago and produced just a few decent photos, so I enjoyed this very much. The barrel tree creation is brilliant, while I would have no trouble believing Whiskey Santa had had a few whiskeys prior to that photo. Where is Tess currently on the Santa believe-ometer? I remember hearing that JD is an amazing company to work for and it’s great to hear that’s still the case. I think this is the first time I’ve started to think about Christmas. Just around the corner.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner, the year seems to have just flown by. I tend to think that Whiskey Santa had definitely partaken right before the picture, he seemed a little wobbly. Tessa’s at the best age for Santa right now- she is a full believer and gets so giddy and almost a little star struck at meeting him. I hope it lasts for a few more years because it’s so fun to watch. Where is your niece at with the man in red? ( or is it the man in green there?)

At that’s lovely about Tess. Alice (now 9) found out the truth this summer. Other kids sewing the seeds of doubt, grr. When my sister confirmed her worst fears she burst into tears. Heartbreaking, really, such a huge loss of innocence in our lives I think.

Grrr is right! That’s always heartbreaking when that fateful moment comes. You want them to have that belief in magic because it’s such a big part of childhood but you also don’t want to have to have the talk about the truth.

How fun, Meg! I loved the history lesson about Jack Daniels – who knew the county was dry! – and the Christmas spirit that all enjoyed. Isn’t that what the season is all about? I think a holiday jaunt to Lynchburg would be a great family tradition.

It was a great way to ring in the season of good cheer 🙂 It is such an oddity that the county of one of the biggest whiskey makers is dry. I would say it was my favorite lighting I’ve ever experienced 🙂 I’m hoping for a post to see all your Christmas decorations after wowing us with your Halloween!

I’d never heard the tiniest thing about that Jack Daniels life story until I read this post, what a great tale! So good when you hear of Companies who know how to treat employees too. What an enjoyable post.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Thank you! 🙂 I think a lot of businesses could take a page out of the Jack Daniels book on how to treat employees and keep them around. They really are like a family and it shows.

What a fun and unique Christmas celebration! And Southern Hospitality is hard to beat. Did Tess enjoy meeting Santa? It can be a bit intimidating for some kids; but she looks happy in the photo! Great post!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Thank you! 🙂 It was so fun and so Tennessee in every way. Luckily she is in full belief mode when it comes to Santa so she was thrilled to meet his southern cousin. Although I think he may have been partaking right before because he was a little wobbly on his feet.

What a neat idea to build a Christmas tree out of whiskey barrels!! I had no idea that Jack Daniels was such a great place to work. This seems like such a fun event to watch the lighting of the barrel tree. It seems very Tennessee!
