I love how today you are sharing one of my favourite Judith Thurman quotes, about that hard-to-describe-feeling of being homesick for somewhere you’ve never actually been. Did you know that there is a German word which describes this feeling: fernweh. The word translated as “farsickness,” the term is closely related to the concept of wanderlust.
For me, just the mere thought of some places can fill me with a sense of fernweh, even when I’ve never been to them before—or, in the case of fictional places or places that no longer exist, can never reasonably expect to. What places make you experince fernweh, Meg? xx

Oh I love that about ‘farsickness’. What a beautiful description and one that I feel so deeply about so many places. I also really love how fictional places are included in that. I have so many places that fill me with fernweh. What place would you say?

For me, it’s always been Alaska and Olympic National Park

those are two excellant places. Ive visted Alaska in the winter but would love to go in the summer when the parks are open. I definitely have farsickness for Olympic NP too 🙂

Oh Aiva, Olympic National Park is such an amazing place to visit, and in my home state too! The hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and more are all so rewarding there. Alaska has rugged beauty that is unlike anything I have experienced. I have visited many times. I hope you get to visit the PNW soon!
