A Something of Nothing

Things have been a little quiet over here with us lately. Well, quiet in the sense of taking off for adventures here and there anyway. Behind the scenes it has been busy and slightly chaotic, on top of just being too hot and sticky lately to really want to get out much.

Brad has been working crazy amounts of over time lately as he took on all the projects of five people who left for other things. Along with that he has been traveling for work, spending one week in northern California and the next week in southern Arizona.

When he landed in California he had a few hours to himself and he was able to go see the mountains for a little bit before diving into the work stuff again. The poor man needs a vacation soon before he starts twitching from the work load.

While Brad has been working, Tessa and I have been getting back into our usual routine with the school year starting. School starts so early here, at least a month sooner than other parts of the country. But already she is loving her new class and teacher and she is back to being busy with homework, dance class, and soccer practice.

My work at the university has been a lot of making arrangements for new international students to arrive on campus, especially a large group of students from Egypt that are coming here for one semester. I am also starting to see a lot of the returning faculty stop by getting ready with their plans for a study abroad program for next year.

I will be teaching a class at the university again this fall so I have been working on putting together my lectures in anticipation of the start of class. Every year, I teach a class on culture and education here in the US. The class is meant for international students, but I always have a few domestic students to join too.

As I was looking over my class notes from last year, I had to laugh again when one student was talking about the 1930s and asked if I was alive then. I blinked a few times, wondering if he was kidding or not, and then realized he was serious. “Nope”, I said, “that was a little before my time”. Apparently for those born in the 2000s, they assume that anyone born in the 1900s (whether that is 1908 or 1980) that we are all lumped into the same group.

But even with all that has been going on lately we have managed to get out and do a few things. One day when we had hit a record high heat wave, we decided to take a stroll through the atriums at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.

There are 3 large atriums at this hotel full of restaurants, waterfalls, garden paths, and even a river offering a boat ride. The atriums are really beautiful and staying in one of the rooms that overlook them must be a real treat.

We also decided last minute to drive over to Dollywood to cool off at the water park, Splash Country. As far as water parks go, I would say that this is a pretty great one. There are plenty of shady places to sit and a variety of activities for any age. We really loved all cramming into a giant family size tube and going down the slide.

Also, the water coaster that is the delightful mix of water slide and roller coaster was a blast and we came back to do it a few times. It was well worth the drive for some time escaping the heat with water slides and the Smoky Mountains in the background.

We are making plans for the rest of the year and are looking forward to those. There is a long weekend coming up and we are narrowing down what we want to do with it. We may try camping in Kentucky, or go back over towards Asheville, North Carolina or go visit the ‘land of Lincoln’ in Springfield, Illinois.

After that, in October we are going to Missouri with a detour into Oklahoma. I am so excited to see Oklahoma, which I know may sound a little strange. In my goal of seeing all 50 states, I have seen 38 of them. When I look at a map of the states I’ve been to, the west and the south are all blocked out except for Oklahoma. And it needles me every time I look at it. There is a splattering of states in the midwest and northeast that I haven’t seen, but for some reason it is Oklahoma staring at me from the sea of seen states that has put it at the top of my list of states I want to see.

After that, November will see us returning to Europe to enjoy the festivities of Christmas markets in France, Germany, and Switzerland. We have just decided this is our favorite way to welcome the holiday season. We are anxiously counting down to this trip and have been making plans as we pour over books and blogs about where we are going.

Lastly, we will spending Christmas in a cabin by the lake in Arkansas. Sounds like quite an idyllic way to end the year. I’m sure in between these we’ll have any other number of adventures that come up.

Anyway, there are the rambling thoughts of today’s post. Thanks for being here. Know that I am always grateful for your community and the time and places we share together. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sounds like a good end of the summer and the beginning of a new school year. Brad hopefully gets a break soon! I would love to sit in one of your classes! I bet you are an amazing teacher. Haha. 1930?! Yikes… I guess nobody knows math anymore. You would be in your 90s! That’s too funny 😁

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

haha, I look really good for my age if I was born in 1930! I hope he gets a break here soon too, it would be nice to get to see him 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend

Those atria look really impressive, Meg. I’m much amused by the student’s question about the 1930s – I’m assuming s/he was just a kid. Looks like you have some great plans – the cabin at Christmas sounds idyllic!!

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Haha, yeah he was in his early 20s and sadly it was a serious question. 🤣 I look really good for my age being born in the 1930! Christmas at the cabin sounds like a perfect ending for the year. I hope you have a great weekend!

The atriums are beautiful. I can only imagine how expensive it would be to stay in that hotel, especially with a room that overlooks the atriums. Christmas in a cabin sounds cozy. Sounds like you’re busy, but have a lot to look forward to.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Definitely busy, but in a good way 🙂 I think we looked up the cost to stay at the hotel and just an interior room no where close to the atrium was around $350/night. We will probably just settle for walking through the atrims instead of staying there. Have a great weekend

Wow. School must end around May1 down there. Am I close?
Your travel plans sound exciting! I hope to get to European Christmas markets one day.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

What’s crazy is school gets out at the end of May and starts at the begginng of August. They have a ridiculous amount of days off built into the year. There was quite an uproar with parents when they canceled school one day for a suggestion of moderate wind.

      1. The Travel Architect Avatar

Wow, a wind day. I’d like one of those! (Teachers loooooooove spontaneous cancellations. Probably more than the students do! As you know, fellow educator.) I’ve had snow days, cold days, one storm damage day many years ago that, thankfully, I didn’t need to use to clean up storm damage because I live pretty far from my school district, and, sadly, a riot day (for one outside the school, not in). I would very much like to add a wind day to my growing list. 🙂

        1. grandmisadventures Avatar

I do love those spontaneous cancelation days…. although I’m glad that we have not had one for a riot, how scary to have that happen close to school. My favorite was when they canceled school for the eclipse or when we get a whole week off because of the little fluffy skiff of snow that doesn’t even stick 🙂 The South is a little weird about snow.

          1. The Travel Architect Avatar

I knew the south was sensitive about a dusting of snow, but an eclipse?!?! What’s the housing market like down there? I’m moving!!

          2. grandmisadventures Avatar

Great idea! They’re building a bunch of new houses in our neighborhood- just saying 🙂

In addition to the sky-high atrium filled with trees and plants, there’s even a river? It sounds like a great place to stay as the hotel has it all! Although, you probably need a map of the property to find your way around! School starts in Ireland in less than two weeks and we are busy getting ready for a new school year. I very much look forward to getting back to our usual schedule. I love your plan about spending the wonderful Christmas season visiting European Christmas markets. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

It’s always nice to get back to the routine of school. I hope your kids have a great new year! The hotel is really impressive with a river through it. At Christmas they have a crazy amount of activities to enjoy. Thankfully, there are maps posted everywhere because it is really easy to get lost. 🙂 xx-Meg

Oh my Meg; I cannot believe that student asked you if you were alive in the 1930s! I wouldn’t want to see their math scores. The hotel atriums are absolutely gorgeous; wow! I hope Brad gets a break soon, and that you all enjoy your upcoming trips and other events.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

I know, clearly math must be a struggle for him. But I must sure look good for my age if I was born in the 30s! The atriums are really incredible. They are so big that there are maps posted everywhere. And the fact that they can keep such large areas cool in this heat is really amazing. I know he is looking forward to a break soon 🙂 have a great weekend

You may not have been travelling around much lately but it seems you have great plans for later in the year. It’s always fun to have something to look forward to 😀

For.me having something to look forward to is a great motivation 🙂 Were really excited for November

Hi Meg, tell Brad to take a breather quick! Apart from that, love to you all and I look forward to reading about your next misadventures 😊

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Hello! Love to you both. I shared your safari pictures with Tessa because she loves animals. She was thrilled to see your pictures and when she saw a picture with you she said “there’s my friends. I just love them”. It was really sweet. :)😊

        Awww how lovely 😃

Aw sounds like it’s been super busy for Brad at work – hope he’s doing OK. I’m also heading up a massive project right now and doing the work of way more than 1 person, it’s so stressful and some days I just come home and cry. It’s only sustainable for so long so I hope he can lower his hours soon. Your plans for Christmas sound absolutely perfect, what a wonderful thing to look forward to 🙂

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

It sounds like you need a vacation too! I hope things at work calm down soon and gives you some breathing room. That kind of pace is so hard on you and really affects body, mind, and soul. Sending you a hug and a hope for calmer days ☺️

Meg, it’s lovely to have you back. I didn’t make it to Opryland during my two visits to Nashville and had not been aware of the atriums. They look so sparkling and spotless, is it a fairly recent construct? Love the “Stax” sign poking out of the greenery. Splash Country looks like an essential field trip with the crazy humidity and temps you guys have been getting. We were so fortunate to experience a mild summer during our travels across The Baltics. Though it is now back to hot, hot, hot (did I mention hot?) in Georgia. Your autumn plans sound fantastic, something to really look forward to. In the meantime I’m anticipating your always excellent U.S. adventures.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Oh cooler days around the Baltics sounds absolutely amazing! I’m glad you were able to get out of the hot, hot, hot of Georgia for a little while. I’m so ready for the summer heat to be over and done with for the year. I’m not sure when the hotel was put in. At one point I know there was an amusement park where the hotel is now trying to make the Grand Ole Opry the one stop family tourist destination of the Tennessee. The atriums are really beautiful- it must be something spectacular to stay there and see the sunrise through the glass tops over the waterfalls. Splash Country was so fun! We probably could have spent the entire day riding the water coaster over and over again.

  11. Little Old World Avatar

Those atriums are lovely and Splash Country looks like a lot of fun! It’s always good to have a holiday booked and something to look forward to, and visiting the Christmas markets is always a nice way to get in the festive spirit. Gosh, I hope Brad’s workload eases soon. I was in a similar position last year and it really wasn’t fun.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

Having something to look forward to makes all the difference sometimes. That overworked position is so hard and really starts to take a toll on you. It was really great to run away to the water park and take a walk around the atriums and to take a breather. I hope you have a great rest of your week. 🙂

You have a lot going on Meg and it’s always good when little ones take to school. My 6yr old grandson now loves his class and all his friends. Your days don’t sound like you have too much time for yourself so it’s good you have plans. You’re doing well with all the states, you have plenty of time left to visit them all. The atrium gardens look beautiful. I’m looking forward to our trip next year to South Carolina and some other states too.

    1. grandmisadventures Avatar

It is good when school starts again and there a little bit more time. I love having plans to look forward to-especially a new state on the list. 🙂 I hope you have a great rest of your week!
