Some of our favorite trips are the ones where we don’t have a long list of things we need to see or do. Sometimes, all we really need is a place to stay, a beach within walking distance, good food, and people we enjoy being around. That was exactly what we had in mind when we headed to Navarre Beach, Florida, for a long weekend with friends.
Navarre Beach sits along Florida’s Gulf Coast in the western Florida Panhandle, between Pensacola Beach and Destin. It’s a barrier island tucked between the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound, giving the area that classic stretch-of-sand-and-water feeling that makes a Gulf Coast getaway so appealing. It was a perfect setting for a few days of slowing down, swimming, watching sunsets, and simply enjoying being together.
We rented a condo within walking distance of the beach, which quickly became one of our favorite parts of the trip. We could wander down to the Gulf in the morning, spend the afternoon in the pool, walk back to the beach in the evening, and watch the sun disappear over the sound.
Of course, the weekend didn’t stay quite that simple. There was fresh seafood, a drive along the Gulf Islands National Seashore, an unexpected afternoon exploring military history, a mysterious funnel-shaped spout forming offshore, and one very memorable roadside stop in Tennessee on the way home.
It turned into exactly the kind of weekend we love—not because we checked everything off a list, but because we left room for the unexpected.

Walking to the Beach, Pool Time, & Sunsets Over the Sound
One of our favorite things about the condo was being able to walk straight to the beach. There is something completely different about staying somewhere where the beach isn’t an activity you have to plan for. We didn’t have to load up the car, find parking, carry everything across a hot parking lot, or decide how long we wanted to stay. We could simply walk down whenever we wanted.
So we saw the beach in all its different moods. There were quiet morning walks when the day was just beginning and the Gulf was still relatively peaceful. During the day, we went back to swim and enjoy the sunshine. And then, when the day was winding down, we walked back to the beach one more time.
The evening walk was probably my favorite. We would make our way down toward the water just as the sun was beginning to disappear. The light softened, the temperature cooled, and the whole beach seemed to slow down with us.
Those are the moments I remember most from trips like this. Not necessarily the big attractions, but walking barefoot toward the water with friends and realizing that there was nowhere else we needed to be.
Of course, the beach wasn’t the only place we spent time outside. We loved having a pool at the condo, too. There is something wonderfully lazy about a beach weekend where you can spend the morning at the Gulf, move to the pool in the afternoon, and then wander back outside again for sunset.
On the other side of Navarre Beach is the Santa Rosa Sound, and watching the sun set over the sound was a completely different experience from watching it disappear over the Gulf. The water became this peaceful backdrop as the sky changed colors.
We could have gone searching for another attraction, but there was something to be said for simply sitting there and watching the sunset. Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what a vacation needs.
We also spent some time driving farther along the coast into the Florida section of Gulf Islands National Seashore. The scenery changed as we drove, with beautiful dunes covered in tall grasses and that endless stretch of blue Gulf water beyond them. It was the kind of drive where you keep looking out the window thinking, how can this possibly be this beautiful?
When we reached Pensacola Beach, though, the scenery changed in a completely different way. We were amazed by the sheer size of the apartment and condo complexes along the beach and by the trolleys carrying visitors back and forth to the water. It was such a contrast to the quieter beach we had been enjoying in Navarre. And it made me realize that everyone does the beach a little differently.
Some people want a quiet stretch of sand and a condo they can walk to from the water. Others want towering beachfront resorts, restaurants, shops, and a trolley ready to take them down to the Gulf. There isn’t really a right way to enjoy the beach—there’s just the version that feels right for you.
Our last morning gave us one more memorable beach experience—although this one wasn’t quite as peaceful. Before we packed up to leave, we went down to the Gulf first thing in the morning for one last swim. The water was beautiful, and we wanted to take advantage of every last minute we had before heading home.
But while we were out there, we noticed some dark clouds beginning to build over the water. And then we saw it. Out over the Gulf was what appeared to be a funnel-shaped spout coming down from the clouds. We weren’t sure if we were looking at a waterspout, the beginnings of a storm, or something else entirely, but whatever it was, it was incredible to watch from the beach.
For a few moments we just stood there watching this strange formation out over the water. It was one of those unexpected moments that makes you stop and stare. Then the practical part of our brains kicked in. We decided that perhaps swimming in the Gulf while a suspicious-looking storm was developing directly offshore wasn’t the best idea after all. We hurried out of the water, grabbed our things, and headed back to the condo.
It was a pretty fitting final memory of our beach weekend: one last swim, one last look at the Gulf, and just enough of a little adventure to remind us that even a relaxing beach getaway can have a misadventure or two.
Finding Fresh Seafood on the Gulf Coast
Of course, no trip to the Florida Gulf Coast would be complete without some good seafood. We found a restaurant that immediately felt like the kind of place you hope to find when you’re visiting the coast. They had a catch of the day, and there was even an ice-filled chest displaying what they had brought in that morning. That’s how you know you’re in the right place for seafood.
We settled in and ordered a little bit of everything. Brad went with crawfish étouffée, I ordered a shrimp po’boy, and our friend decided on the crab corn chowder. And that chowder turned out to be the surprise favorite of the entire table.
It was so good that our friend insisted that everyone try it. Then, after all of us had sampled it, he decided that simply enjoying it once wasn’t enough. He begged the server for the recipe so he could make it at home on a regular basis. I’m not sure whether the server actually gave him the recipe, but I do know that the chowder made quite an impression.
That’s one of my favorite things about eating while traveling. Sometimes you find a restaurant because it looks good or because someone recommended it, but the meal becomes memorable for an entirely unexpected reason. In this case, it wasn’t just fresh Gulf seafood—it was a bowl of crab corn chowder that apparently needed to become a permanent part of our friend’s home cooking repertoire.
It was exactly the kind of casual, delicious meal we were hoping to find during a weekend at the beach.
A Visit to the Eglin Air Force Armament Museum
By the middle of the afternoon, the Florida heat and humidity had really settled in, so we decided it was time to find somewhere indoors for a while. That led us to the Eglin Air Force Armament Museum, located just outside Eglin Air Force Base. The fact that admission is free was an added bonus.
We were interested in seeing the museum because of the military history, but we weren’t quite prepared for how much we would appreciate the way that history was presented. The museum has an impressive collection of aircraft, weapons, and other military artifacts, but it doesn’t feel like it is simply celebrating the machinery of war.
Instead, it gives visitors an opportunity to understand the role these weapons and aircraft played throughout American history and the enormous impact that different wars have had on the people involved.
Walking through the exhibits was a sobering experience. Seeing the actual armaments used throughout history makes the reality of war feel much less distant than it can when you only read about it in a history book. The displays helped put the technology into context while also recognizing the human cost and sacrifice that came with it.
We especially appreciated the respectful tone throughout the museum. There was plenty to see and learn, but it never felt sensationalized. And honestly, after spending the morning in the Florida sunshine, an air-conditioned museum was a pretty welcome change!
If you’re visiting Navarre Beach or traveling through the Florida Panhandle, the Eglin Air Force Armament Museum makes an interesting addition to a beach-focused itinerary. It’s educational, meaningful, indoors, and free—which makes it an especially nice option for an afternoon when you need a break from the heat.
One Last Stop on the Way Home: Dolly Parton’s Tennessean Travel Stop
Eventually, our long weekend came to an end. We packed up the condo, said goodbye to our friends, and started the drive home. But we weren’t quite ready for the weekend to be over. So we added one more stop to the journey. We stopped at Dolly Parton’s Tennessean Travel Stop. And this stop felt different from the others.
Dolly had recently passed away, and there was still a sense of fresh grief surrounding her. In fact, before we even walked through the doors, we could see how much she meant to people. A large flower arrangement sat outside the entrance, and the ground around it was covered with rubber ducks, handwritten cards, and little tributes from people who had come to pay their respects.
It was incredibly tender to see. The travel stop had only recently opened, and knowing that its opening had been one of Dolly’s final public appearances made the timing feel even more poignant. People were still processing the loss of someone who had been such a beloved part of their lives.
As we stood there looking at the flowers and cards, it felt less like we were arriving at a new roadside attraction and more like we had stumbled into a place where people were saying goodbye.
One of the first things that caught our attention was the chandelier. It was made from guitars. In true Dolly fashion the guitars were beautiful, ornate, glittery, and seemed perfectly fitting of the feel of the place.
Then there was the smell. BBQ was coming from the restaurant, filling the building with that unmistakable Tennessee comfort-food smell.
And then we found the Cup of Ambition coffee shop. Even the name felt perfectly Dolly. The video of her on the wall talking about needing a cup of ambition gave us joy and renewed sadness at losing her.
Everywhere we looked there were little pieces of her personality, her music, and her love for Tennessee. But more than any individual decoration or attraction, what stood out was the feeling of the place. There was a genuine sense of affection for Dolly.
People weren’t simply visiting a famous celebrity’s roadside attraction. They were remembering someone who had become such a beloved part of Tennessee. And after a weekend spent enjoying Florida with friends, ending our trip by coming home through a place dedicated to Dolly felt surprisingly fitting.
We had spent the weekend surrounded by sunshine, water, good food, and friends. Then, on our way home, we found ourselves surrounded by reminders of someone whose whole life seemed to be about bringing a little more joy and light into the world. It was a tender way to end our trip.
Planning Your Visit to Navarre Beach
Navarre Beach makes an easy choice for a relaxed Florida Gulf Coast getaway. We spent a long weekend here with friends, renting a condo within walking distance of the beach, and that turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip. Being able to walk down to the water whenever we wanted made the weekend feel wonderfully unhurried.
Where to Stay
For a laid-back beach weekend, I would look for a condo or vacation rental close to the beach. Having a kitchen and a little more space made it easy for us to settle in for several days, especially since we were traveling with friends.
Being able to walk to the beach was especially nice. We could go down first thing in the morning, spend the afternoon by the water, or take an evening walk without having to load everyone into the car.
Many accommodations in the area also have pools, which gave us another way to enjoy the water when we weren’t at the beach.
Pay Attention to the Beach Flags
Before heading into the Gulf, take a moment to check the beach flag warnings. Conditions can change from day to day, and the flags are an important way to know about hazards such as strong currents and dangerous surf.
The flag system can also alert visitors when marine life, including jellyfish, may be present. We learned this lesson during our visit when we encountered quite a few jellyfish along the shoreline. Even when they are washed up on the sand, jellyfish can still sting, so it’s worth watching where you step and paying attention to any warnings posted at the beach.
And don’t assume that calm-looking water means there are no hazards. On our last morning, we were swimming in the Gulf when we noticed dark clouds building over the water and even saw what appeared to be a waterspout in the distance. It was incredible to watch from the beach—but it was also our cue to get out of the water and head back to the condo!
Check the flags every time you visit the beach, rather than relying on what the conditions looked like the day before. A few seconds of checking can make your beach day much safer.
Enjoy More Than Just the Beach
The beach is obviously the main attraction, but there are plenty of ways to fill out a long weekend around Navarre.
We spent time swimming in the Gulf, relaxing by the pool, walking along the beach, and watching the sunset over the sound. We also made time for a good seafood dinner, which is practically a requirement for a Gulf Coast getaway.
If you’re interested in history and aviation, the Eglin Air Force Armament Museum is worth adding to your itinerary. It offers a very different experience from a day at the beach and gives you a chance to learn about the weapons and aircraft that have played a role in American military history.
Don’t Rush the Weekend
Our favorite part of the trip may have been how little we actually had planned.
We had a place to stay, friends to spend time with, the beach within walking distance, and a few things we wanted to see. That left plenty of time to simply enjoy being there.
If you’re visiting Navarre Beach for a long weekend, I wouldn’t feel pressured to fill every hour with activities. Leave room for a morning swim, an afternoon at the pool, a walk at sunset, or one last trip down to the Gulf before heading home.
Sometimes those unplanned moments end up being the best part of the trip.
Our weekend had taken us through a pretty wide range of experiences. We had walked along the Gulf in the morning, spent lazy afternoons in the pool, watched sunsets over the sound, eaten incredibly fresh seafood, and learned about the history of military armament.
Then, on the drive home, we stopped to remember Dolly. It wasn’t a carefully planned itinerary. In fact, that’s probably why I liked it so much. We simply followed the weekend wherever it took us.
Navarre Beach gave us the kind of relaxed beach escape where the biggest decision of the day could be whether we wanted to walk to the Gulf or the pool. The museum gave us something more thoughtful to consider. And Dolly gave us a tender reminder that travel isn’t always about seeing something new. Sometimes it’s about stopping somewhere familiar and appreciating what—or who—has meant something to you.
By the time we finally headed home, we were rested, a little sun-kissed, well-fed, and carrying a few more memories than we’d expected when we left. And isn’t that usually how the best misadventures happen?
