What is Zoolumination?
Zoolumination is one of the largest Chinese lantern festivals in the United States. Created by talented Chinese artisans, the festival features more than a thousand handcrafted silk lanterns supported by intricate wire frames. Together they transform Nashville Zoo into an unforgettable evening experience celebrating Chinese culture, art, and traditional folklore.
Even if you’ve visited Nashville Zoo before, Zoolumination offers an entirely different experience after dark. Instead of focusing on the animals, the zoo becomes an outdoor gallery filled with thousands of handcrafted lanterns.
The event combines incredible craftsmanship with storytelling, creating an experience that appeals to both children and adults. Whether you’re admiring towering dragons, wandering beneath glowing lanterns, or watching colorful reflections dance across the water, Zoolumination feels more like stepping into another world than visiting a traditional holiday light display.

Best Things to See at Zoolumination
Walk Through Thousands of Illuminated Lanterns
From the moment we stepped through the illuminated entrance archway, we knew this would be unlike any holiday light display we had experienced before. Every pathway was lined with glowing lanterns, colorful blossoms, shimmering butterflies overhead, and beautifully crafted scenes that stretched in every direction.
The creativity behind each display was incredible. Knowing each lantern had been handcrafted by Chinese artists made us appreciate the artistry even more.

Discover Chinese Folktales and Mythical Creatures
One of our favorite parts of Zoolumination was seeing Chinese mythology come to life through the lantern displays.
Towering dragons, winged tigers, graceful peacocks, and legendary nine-tailed foxes filled the pathways with color and imagination. Each display felt like a page from an ancient story brought to life through light.
The resident dragons were especially impressive. Walking beneath the enormous Cloud Dragon and Turtle Dragon gave us a real sense of their size and grandeur, making them some of the most memorable displays of the evening.

Stand Beneath the Magnificent Dragons
The dragons were some of the most impressive displays at Zoolumination. Towering high above the pathways, these incredible lanterns showcased the artistry and symbolism found throughout Chinese culture.
One of the featured displays was the Cloud Dragon, a legendary figure that has appeared in Chinese folklore for centuries and is often associated with strength, wisdom, and good fortune. Nearby was the mighty Turtle Dragon, a guardian said to support the heavens. Walking beneath these enormous illuminated creations gave us a true appreciation for their scale and craftsmanship.

Experience Nashville Zoo After Dark
Exploring the zoo at night is a completely different experience from visiting during the day.
Most of the animals had already settled in for the evening, creating a peaceful atmosphere throughout the zoo. We were lucky enough to spot the black bear still awake, while a group of flamingos wandered through the water nearby.
One particularly cheeky flamingo decided we were interrupting bedtime and marched right over to us, flapping its wings and squawking in protest. It was one of those unexpected travel moments that still makes us laugh.

Admire the Reflections Across the Water
One of the most beautiful displays featured colorful ocean creatures surrounding the zoo’s pond. Their reflections shimmered across the calm water, doubling the brilliant colors and creating one of the most peaceful scenes of the evening.
It quickly became one of our favorite spots to simply stop, look around, and enjoy the beauty of the festival.

Explore Ancient Chang’an
One of the most impressive displays recreated the ancient city of Chang’an during the Tang Dynasty as it celebrated the Shang Yuan Festival.
Complete with glowing buildings, lanterns, and people celebrating together, the display felt like stepping back through history. Seeing an ancient capital city recreated entirely through illuminated lanterns showcased not only remarkable craftsmanship but also the stories and traditions behind Chinese culture.
