The Story Behind Lambert’s Cafe

Lambert’s Cafe began in Sikeston on March 13, 1942, when Earl and Agnes Lambert opened a small restaurant with just eight tables, nine counter stools, and enough seating for 41 people. They opened during the difficult years of World War II, when food and other supplies were heavily rationed, but somehow the little restaurant survived.

What began as a small local cafe eventually became one of Missouri’s most recognizable roadside dining experiences.

The famous throwed rolls didn’t actually begin until 1976.

According to Lambert’s own history, Earl’s son Norman was trying to serve hot rolls to customers the traditional way. On an especially busy day, a customer apparently got tired of waiting and told him to just throw the thing.

So he did. And then everyone else joined in. Lambert’s has been throwing rolls ever since. What started as a solution to a crowded lunch rush turned into the thing that would make Lambert’s famous.

Today there are three Lambert’s locations—Sikeston, Ozark, Missouri, and Foley, Alabama—but Sikeston is where the whole story began. And that made visiting the original location feel a little more special.

From the moment we walked into Lambert’s, it was obvious that this wasn’t going to be a quiet, sit-down-and-whisper kind of dinner. Instead, there was energy everywhere.

We found our table and settled in to see what the Lambert’s experience was all about. And then the food started coming.

Lambert’s is known for its large portions of Southern and country-style comfort food, and after our meal, I can confirm that the portions aren’t just part of the restaurant’s reputation. They are big.

For our meal, I ordered the country fried steak, Brad went with the catfish, and Tessa had a pulled pork sandwich. Every one of them was excellent.

My country fried steak was exactly the kind of hearty comfort food I was hoping for, while Brad’s catfish was a big hit as well. Tessa happily dug into her pulled pork sandwich, which was definitely more food than our daughter needed for one meal—but that didn’t stop her from enjoying it.

And then there were the pass-arounds.

That’s part of what makes eating at Lambert’s different from a typical restaurant. Servers continue making their way around the dining room offering additional sides and food to the tables. So even after your entree arrives, the meal isn’t really finished.

Eventually, we heard the call we had been waiting for and hot rolls were coming through the dining room. And yes, they really do throw them.

Servers stand at various points around the restaurant and launch the warm rolls toward customers who want one. Some throws are short and easy. Others require a little more confidence in your catching abilities.

You can hear people calling out when they’re ready, and then suddenly there’s a roll sailing across the room. It is ridiculous and entertaining and somehow it works.

For us, absolutely. Could we have gotten a good meal somewhere else in Sikeston? Of course. But we wouldn’t have gotten a hot roll flying through the air toward our table.
